Chapter 4: the Kadagam (Cancer) Ascendant — the Moon's only sign, a water sign of the heart, mother, and memory. Frame it as "the ruling sign": the author calls Cancer the foremost of the movable signs, where the great benefic Jupiter is exalted and the cool Moon rules. Same study method as before; confirm against the whole chart.

HOW THIS SESSION RUNS

What we will cover

1

Foundations

Nature, ruler, dignities (Jupiter exalted, Mars debilitated), significations, places

2

House map & doṣas

Lordships for a Cancer chart, plus the māraka and bādhaka picture

3

The native's portrait

Three classical texts + the author's 'ruling sign' reading

4

Nine planets

Moon, Sun, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — each alone

5

Conjunctions

The Moon with each graha — including two famous rāja-yogas

6

Synthesis

Neechabhaṅga, Gaja-Kesari, and reading the royal sign

Teaching note

Same six-movement arc. Preview the two headline yogas this sign is famous for: Moon+Mars (Neechabhaṅga + Chandra-Maṅgala) and Moon+exalted-Jupiter (Gaja-Kesari). Note the paradox to come — the yogakāraka Mars is debilitated here.

FOUNDATIONS

Kadagam at a glance

Symbol

நண்டு — the Crab (many-legged). Hence 'Cancer'.

Element / class

Water-natured · saumya (benign) · highly fertile · a solstitial (ayana) sign

Modality

Chara (சர · movable) · Yugma (even) · female sign

Order & body

4th sign of the zodiac · signifies the heart (இருதயம்)

Ruler / dignities

Moon (சந்திரன்) — its only own sign · Jupiter exalted · Mars debilitated

Direction / colour

North (வடக்கு) · white / pale-brown · strong at night · pṛṣṭhodaya

The Moon's only home — a water sign of the heart, the mother, and a long, unforgetting memory.
Teaching note

Anchor the image: the crab, water, the heart, the Moon, the mother. Water + Moon + movable predicts a feeling, tenacious, protective, memory-holding nature. Note Cancer is where the Sun turns south (Dakṣiṇāyana) — a solstitial sign — and the Moon's blood/circulation link.

FOUNDATIONS

Planetary dignities in Kadagam

GrahaDignity / roleTeaching note
Moon (சந்திரன்)Own sign — ஆட்சிLord of the Lagna; Cancer is its only own house
Jupiter (குரு)Exaltation — உச்சம்Exalted here (5°); 9th lord + 6th → 'half-yogakāraka'
Mars (செவ்வாய்)Debilitation — நீசம்Yet the FULL yogakāraka (5th+10th) — the great paradox
Sun (சூரியன்)Friend — நட்பு2nd lord, friendly-natured toward this Ascendant
Merc·Ven·Sat·Rahu·KetuEnmity — பகைAll five take enmity; no planet is neutral here
The paradox of Cancer: its own yogakāraka, Mars, is debilitated — yet still a giver.
Teaching note

Backbone table. Headline: Jupiter is EXALTED and Mars, the yogakāraka, is DEBILITATED here — the central puzzle the chapter resolves. Mars owns a kendra (10) AND a trikoṇa (5) = the great yogakāraka for Cancer; Jupiter owns the 9th trine but also the 6th, so 'half'. Only friend: the Sun.

Full yogakāraka

Mars (10th kendra + 5th trikoṇa) is the great yogakāraka — even debilitated it gives. Jupiter (9th+6th) is a 'half' yoga-giver.

Māraka — 2nd & 7th

Sun (2nd) and Saturn (7th) are mārakādhipatis — the standard classical houses here.

Bādhaka — 11th

Movable signs take the 11th as bādhaka; Venus is bādhakādhipati.

Teaching note

Internalise the lordships. Two teaching points: (1) Mars owning 5+10 is why it's the yogakāraka despite its debilitation. (2) Unlike Rishabam and Mithunam, the author here uses the STANDARD māraka houses (2 & 7) — a good moment to note his scheme aligns with the classics this time. Bādhaka = 11th is correct for a movable sign.

FOUNDATIONS

What Kadagam governs (kārakatva)

Water & wealth

Ponds, tanks, wetlands, the seashore; silver, pearl, mercury; ships & boats; paddy & banana; fish-farming; water-foods

Mind & rule

A shrewd, strategic mind; administrative skill; sharp intellect; leadership; training in the three Vedas (Ṛk, Yajur, Sāma)

Heart & feeling

Mother-affection; divine devotion; religious observance; moderate eating; a vengeful, long memory; foreign connection

Body & health

The heart & blood (the Moon rules blood); kapha/phlegm disease — cough, pneumonia; heart-related disorders

Teaching note

The through-line is water + the Moon: liquids, pearls, ships, fisheries, the mother, feeling, memory — and, notably, administrative/leadership skill (the 'ruling sign'). The health cluster is the heart and blood (Moon = blood) plus kapha. All recur in the planet sections.

FOUNDATIONS

Places ruled by Kadagam

Within Bhārat

Kutch & Kathiawar (Gujarat) · the banks of the Ganga, Sindhu & Yamuna · East Bengal · SE Orissa · Madhya Pradesh · northern Bihar

Around the world

Canada · central Russia (Siberia) · China · New Zealand · coastal Africa · the Philippines · sea-fed lakes & river-banks

Foreign name Kuleeram (from Cancer / Karkinos). The theme is watery, coastal and riverine land — fitting the crab and the Moon.
Teaching note

Used in mundane and relocation work. The common thread is water: coasts, great lakes, river-deltas. Fits the crab and the Moon's watery rulership. Continues the foreign-naming thread (Kuleeram) from the earlier signs.

THE NATIVE'S PORTRAIT

Classical view · two authorities

Phaladīpikā

Submissive to women; thick neck; many houses; much women-connection; wealthy; short; shrewd intellect; swift gait; scholarly; a never-forgetting memory; fond of water; lovely children.

Satyāchārya

Soft/feminine intellect; a timid nature; a mole on the chest; kapha-vāta excess; clashes with fierce enemies; arrogant to relatives; goes abroad; a merchant and excellent leader; an incompatible wife.

Teaching note

Read as period portraits. Both catch the watery, tenacious, memory-holding, wealth-and-leadership nature, and the complicated marriage theme. Note the recurring 'sharp memory / shrewd intellect / leadership' motifs that define the 'ruling sign'.

THE NATIVE'S PORTRAIT

Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram

A reddish body; capable/powerful; walks stooping; desires courtesans; wealth through the nine-grains trade; devoted to the teacher; goes against the father's word; a hidden mole; poor for a period.

SUDDEN DANGERS AT AGES
5

danger

16

danger

20

danger

25

danger

With benefic aspect, lifespan up to 90. Death indicated: month of Māsi, waxing fortnight, Pañcamī tithi, a Wednesday, in Mṛgaśīrṣa nakshatra, at midday.
Teaching note

Note 'devoted to the teacher yet defies the father' — the mother-attached, father-distant pattern the author develops. Treat the age-dangers and the death-timing as illustrative classical material, not a verdict.

THE NATIVE'S PORTRAIT

From experience · the royal temperament

The ruling sign

Many Cancer natives have 'adorned the throne'. A distinct, special quality is always in them — they set themselves a little apart.

Eyes in the back of the head

Very alert and cautious; look slow but are highly energetic; tireless and unyielding until the task is done.

One firm decision

Self-reliant, determined to achieve; say and do openly what they feel is right; hold to one decision under any pressure; keep their word.

A long memory

Return good for good — and, biding their time, repay harm for harm. They fear nothing and face anything boldly.

Teaching note

The author's 'ruling sign' portrait — tenacious, watchful, decisive, and long-memoried (gratitude and grudge alike). The crab's grip: they don't let go. Frame the revenge trait descriptively as tenacity of memory, not malice.

THE NATIVE'S PORTRAIT

From experience · fame, family, desire

Charmed by praise

Charitable — but for recognition; publicity-and-pomp lovers; the crowd must keep praising them; a little flattery gets the work done.

Position seeks them

Enthusiastic in administration; strong political & government prospects; responsibilities and positions come to them; they spend to hold their fame.

Mother, not father

Deep mother-attachment and love for sisters and daughters; little bond with the father.

High desire

Mostly no satisfying wife; leave the home to her and withdraw; connections with other women; of high desire — 'a woman's touch must always be upon them'.

Teaching note

The softer, more human side: the need for recognition (flattery works on them), the strong maternal bond and father-distance, and the restless desire. Handle the desire material maturely as the text's framing. The publicity-love is a memorable, teachable trait.

PART 4

The Nine Planets
in Kadagam

Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Cancer native

Candra · Sūrya · Kuja · Budha · Guru · Śukra · Śani · Rāhu · Ketu

Teaching note

Into the practical core. Remind students: the Moon (lord) and exalted Jupiter shine; Mars is the debilitated-but-still-giving yogakāraka; the Sun is the one friend. Watch the debilitated-Mars reasoning — it teaches that dignity alone doesn't settle a verdict.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
☽

Moon (Candra)

சந்திரன்
Lord · 1st

The lord at home — superb when waxing.

  • Waxing Moon: firm-minded, completes what they take up; a relishing nature; luxury-and-decoration lovers; always spotless and attractive.
  • Leadership-bearing; discharge responsibility precisely, so position and fame seek them; never show their inner fickleness.
  • Attractive to women (who come of their own accord); charitable, generous; melt at the very word 'mother'.
  • Waning Moon reverses it: unsteady, quick to emotion, procrastinating; ties with unworthy people and low-class women; empty threats; very obstinate.
Teaching note

The lord's placement — check the pakṣa (phase) first, always. Waxing = the poised, magnetic leader; waning = unsteady and obstinate. The 'melts at the word mother' line captures the sign's core.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
☉

Sun (Sūrya)

சூரியன்
Friend · 2nd lord

Special — magnanimous, upright.

  • Energetic and swift; magnanimous; quick to anger and quick to cool; regret and apologise when wrong.
  • But won't accept a false blame — will fight back; can't bear the least disrespect.
  • Respect others; accept good ideas from anywhere; never surrender honour; not miserly; charitable; family-attached.
  • Politically & public-service inclined; won't wander for women but use a chance that comes; upright, word-keeping dealers.
Teaching note

The Sun is the one friend for Cancer (2nd lord). A dignified, honourable placement: magnanimous, quick-tempered-but-forgiving, and upright. The 'won't accept false blame' note fits the royal self-respect of the sign.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
♂

Mars (Kuja)

செவ்வாய்

Yogakāraka · debilitated · 5th & 10th

  • The important 5th+10th lord (the yogakāraka) is debilitated here — how to judge a weakened yoga-giver?
  • Yet, as kendra+trikoṇa lord standing in the Lagna, it keeps some strength: 'even when the camphor is spent, the scent lingers.'
  • Debilitation-strength isn't full across all 30° (deep nīca is at one degree) — so a debilitated Mars doesn't wholly spoil its results.
  • Adds discretion to the sign's bravado; as 5th lord gives sharp intellect, cleverness, fame, professional rise; strong sibling-bonds. No real deficiency in life.
Teaching note

The chapter's central teaching. Mars is the yogakāraka (owns 5+10) but debilitated — the author's beautiful resolution: dignity alone doesn't settle a verdict; house-lordship and placement (kendra+trikoṇa in the Lagna) keep it a giver. The 'camphor's scent' image is worth quoting.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
☿

Mercury (Budha)

புதன்

Enemy · 3rd & 12th

  • Pompous big-shots who do something to elevate and show themselves off; boast much — 'nothing is beyond us'.
  • No secret hidden from them; slip out of any tangle; handle any big problem cleverly, knowing every twist and turn.
  • Good spenders — but very stingy for others; get everything done at others' expense.
  • Adepts in the art of love who seduce by a look or smile and gain income through (wealthy) women; 'live as you please while you can'.
Teaching note

Mercury is an enemy (3rd & 12th lord) for Cancer, so the reading leans toward showy self-interest and living on others' spending. The 'clever, unforgettable-to-women, gets-by' theme is the Mercury signature, coloured by its enmity here.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
♃

Jupiter (Guru)

குரு

Exalted · 9th & 6th

  • The exalted bhāgyādhipati (9th lord) gives scholarly wisdom, discernment, fame, influence, honour.
  • Leadership, headmanship, skill in resolving disputes; creates public service, divine works, political connection.
  • Mostly selfless; never reduce their honour — spend even their own money or borrow to uphold it; upright, settle any debt.
  • Of desire but restrained; leave the family to the wife; attached to children (esp. daughters); keep other-women ties so honour isn't touched; never come down low.
Teaching note

Jupiter is EXALTED here (opposite of its debilitation in Capricorn) — the most auspicious single placement: wisdom, honour, leadership, dharmic standing. This sets up the Gaja-Kesari yoga (Moon + exalted Jupiter) in the conjunctions.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
♀

Venus (Śukra)

சுக்கிரன்

Enemy · 4th & 11th

  • Not a bad state: honour, status, a comfortable life, servants, vehicles, a novel luxurious house — comforts never reduced.
  • Luxurious and pompous; show their soft side to women; spend on pomp whether they can afford it or not.
  • Adepts at relishing women (who, charmed, seek them, bringing income); love the wife much though her hand dominates — yet seek others too.
  • High desire unfed by the wife alone; fond of spending on women, perfumes, luxury clothes; decorate the home; shun hardship.
Teaching note

Venus is an enemy (4th & 11th; 11th is bādhaka) but still gives comfort and sensual pleasure — the reading is luxury, aesthetics and restless desire, with the marriage-plus-others theme. Present the desire material as the text's framing.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
♄

Saturn (Śani)

சனி

Enemy · 7th & 8th

  • Much longevity (possibly beyond 80) — but very lazy; depend on others even for small tasks; waste chances by procrastinating.
  • Forever lamenting 'what sin did I do — I have no advancement!'; withdraw, yet feel others push them aside.
  • Expect no appreciation; keep finding fault; can neither do it themselves nor get others to; make mountains of molehills.
  • Meek before the wife at home, but form ties with low-class women outside; never satisfied — in desire or anything else.
Teaching note

Saturn is an enemy (7th & 8th, a māraka and a dusthāna) for Cancer — the reading is longevity paired with lethargy, discontent and self-pity. The author's Gospel allusion ('come, all ye that labour and are heavy laden') is a striking literary touch worth mentioning.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
☊

Rahu (Rāhu)

ராகு
Enemy

Surface-skimming, money-driven.

  • Surface-skimmers who boast that nothing is unknown to them; poke into needless matters and get insulted — but feel nothing at insult.
  • A greedy, blind drive to earn by crooked shortcuts; drawn to gambling, racing, speculation, lottery and political dealings.
  • Unafraid of fights; some make this a trade, as henchmen to politicians and big men.
  • Bad things register faster than good; seek low-class women; family means little; money is the only aim — 'one can live anyhow'.
Teaching note

Rahu is an enemy here — the reading is a thick-skinned, money-at-any-cost, gambling-and-politics type with weak family bonds. The cautionary node for Cancer; present descriptively.

NINE PLANETS · IN THE LAGNA
☋

Ketu (Ketu)

கேது
Enemy

Shrewd, secretive, occult-edged.

  • Know much; very cautious; can't easily be deceived — they get in and out 'where even air cannot'.
  • Good and bad at their fingertips; won't cheat those who trust them, but bide their time to topple those who don't.
  • Fearless, with a memory for repaying harm; skilled in jyotiṣa, mantra-craft and tantra — will counter-strike by the same means.
  • Some are fake swāmis or do conjuring 'siddha-work' and magic; of high, undiscriminating desire.
Teaching note

Ketu is an enemy here — the reading is the sharp, secretive, occult-tinged, hard-to-read type, loyal to the trusting and dangerous to the distrusting. The mantra-tantra and false-guru motif recurs across the nodes. Present descriptively.

PART 5

Conjunctions
in Kadagam

The Moon joined with each planet — and two of Jyotiṣa's most famous rāja-yogas

Neechabhaṅga · Chandra-Maṅgala · Gaja-Kesari

Teaching note

The Moon is the lord, so the author frames combinations as 'Moon with X'. Preview the two crown jewels: Moon+Mars (Neechabhaṅga + Chandra-Maṅgala) and Moon+exalted-Jupiter (Gaja-Kesari) — both boon-states for Cancer.

CONJUNCTIONS

Moon + Sun · Moon + Mars

Moon + Sun

Special: astonishing skill; energetic, roaming town, country and world to earn and gain experience; very magnanimous; think everything through and never backtrack; good status, fame, honourable positions; charitable, family-attached, clean-spoken.

Moon + Mars — a boon-state

Amazing! The yogakāraka Mars conjoining the Moon gains BOTH Neechabhaṅga Rāja Yoga AND Chandra-Maṅgala Yoga — a lofty state: excellent profession, fame, honour, influence, position, political connection, servants, vehicles; exemplary sibling-unity and mother-affection; leadership-worthy.

Teaching note

Moon+Mars is the star combination and the payoff of the debilitated-Mars discussion: with its own dispositor the Moon in the Lagna, the debilitation is CANCELLED (Neechabhaṅga Rāja Yoga), and Chandra-Maṅgala adds wealth/drive. Teach that a debilitated planet can become a rāja-yoga giver.

CONJUNCTIONS

Moon + Mercury · Moon + Jupiter

Moon + Mercury

Good intellect and subject-knowledge; the 'camphor-mind' grasping anything at once; ready answer, never deceived, alert; read even an opponent and 'put him in their pocket'; especially skilled at winning women; poor relations with the father; arrange a comfortable life by any means.

Moon + Jupiter — Gaja-Kesari

A most wonderful state: the exalted Jupiter with the Lagna-lord Moon forms Gaja-Kesari Yoga — so strong even a waning Moon doesn't reduce it. Leadership, divine works, dharmakartā/headman roles; magnanimous; never honour-reducing; charitable; never come down low; word-keeping and honesty as their very life.

Teaching note

The second crown jewel: Moon + exalted Jupiter = Gaja-Kesari, the classic 'elephant-lion' yoga of fame and dignity, extra-strong here because Jupiter is exalted. Contrast with Moon+Mercury, which is clever and pleasant but father-distant and self-arranging.

CONJUNCTIONS

Moon + Venus · Moon + Saturn

Moon + Venus

Keeps life-comforts undiminished, but pompous and luxury-loving; spend much for a showy life and to win praise; decorate the home; much love for the wife (lavishly adorned) — and other women too; 'life is for pleasure', they abhor sorrow; contract women-related diseases through the women they spend on.

Moon + Saturn

Not special: good thoughts won't arise; weary and agitated; without self-confidence; interfere and fault-find even after leaving the home to the wife; never satisfied — 'even a heavenly apsara as wife would be turned into a demoness by their discontent'.

Teaching note

Moon+Venus is comfortable and sensual but spendthrift; Moon+Saturn is the discontent combination — the vivid 'apsara turned demoness' line captures a chronic dissatisfaction that no partner can satisfy. Handle the desire material as the text's framing.

CONJUNCTIONS

Moon + Rahu · Moon + Ketu

Moon + Rahu

Not a special state: unsteady of mind; speak and act differently every moment; untrustworthy, though skilled at all sorts of trickery; without good thought or discernment they don't advance; spend blindly; keep company only with low-class people.

Moon + Ketu

Turns them grimly detached and hard-hearted — unmoved even by a murder before their eyes; speak like vedāntins while hesitating at no work; mostly 'underground' masqueraders whose depth no one can fathom; very secretive — deal with them very cautiously.

Teaching note

The nodal conjunctions with the lord Moon destabilise it — Rahu = untrustworthy and blind-spending, Ketu = cold, secretive, occult-detached. The cautionary counterpart to the Mars and Jupiter yogas. Present descriptively.

CONJUNCTIONS

The multi-planet combines

The crowning combines

Sun+Moon+Mars is very special; add Jupiter and nothing equals it — a nation-ruling leader and great administrator (Gaja-Kesari + Kuja-Maṅgala + Chandra-Maṅgala together). Moon+Mars+Jupiter, Sun+Mars+Jupiter, Sun+Moon+Jupiter, Sun+Moon+Mercury all elevate.

The favourable combines

Guru+Moon+Mercury, Guru+Mercury+Venus, Moon+Mercury+Venus can't be called flawed — even with small defects, they elevate life and give responsibilities.

The middling combines

Guru+Moon+Saturn and Guru+Moon+Rahu/Ketu give mixed good & bad; Guru+Mars+Saturn and Guru+Rahu/Ketu give middling results, with some comforts.

The weak combines

Moon+Mars+Saturn, Moon+Mars+Rahu/Ketu, Mars+Saturn+nodes, Moon+Saturn+nodes, Mercury+Venus+Moon, and the Saturn-node mixes give little distinction and alter the character.

Teaching note

Summarise the author's combine guidance in four tiers. Headline: any combination gathering the Moon, Mars (yogakāraka) and exalted Jupiter is supreme — potentially a national leader. Saturn and the nodes drag toward discontent and instability. Sets up the synthesis.

SYNTHESIS

Putting it together

"Even when the camphor is spent, the scent lingers where it lay — so a debilitated yogakāraka still gives."

Cancer in one line: the Moon's tenacious, royal water — steadied by an exalted Jupiter and a debilitated-but-giving Mars.

Two rāja-yogas define it — Neechabhaṅga/Chandra-Maṅgala (Moon+Mars) and Gaja-Kesari (Moon+Jupiter). Confirm with the whole chart.

Teaching note

Close the analytic arc. The Cancer lesson: dignity alone doesn't settle a verdict — a debilitated yogakāraka can even become a rāja-yoga giver (Neechabhaṅga). Reiterate: single-factor readings are indicative; confirm with strength, aspects, vargas, daśā.

SYNTHESIS

Key takeaways

1

Kadagam = movable, watery, Moon-ruled — tenacious, feeling, royal, long-memoried.

2

Jupiter is exalted here; Mars, the yogakāraka, is debilitated.

3

Mars owns a kendra (10) + trikoṇa (5) — the great yogakāraka despite its nīca.

4

Moon & exalted Jupiter shine; the Sun is the one friend; the rest are enemies.

5

Two crown yogas: Moon+Mars (Neechabhaṅga + Chandra-Maṅgala), Moon+Jupiter (Gaja-Kesari).

6

A debilitated planet keeps some strength — the camphor's scent lingers; confirm with the full chart.

Teaching note

Recap — have students say each back. The two things to remember: Mars is the yogakāraka even though debilitated (and cancels its debilitation with the Moon), and Jupiter is exalted, giving Gaja-Kesari with the Moon.
