சிம்மம்Simmam — Leo
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Chapter 5: the Simmam (Leo) Ascendant — the Sun's only sign, a fixed royal fire sign of the lion. Frame it: self-reliant, commanding, proud; 'the lion hunts its own food and never eats a fallen creature.' No planet is exalted or debilitated here, so the sign 'gives one consistent result.' Same study method; confirm against the whole chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, dignities (none exalted/debilitated), significations, places
House map & doṣas
Lordships for a Leo chart, plus the māraka and bādhaka picture
The native's portrait
Three classical texts + the author's 'lion' reading
Nine planets
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — each alone
Conjunctions
The Sun with each graha — including Budha-Āditya
Synthesis
The royal self-reliance, and reading a fixed fire sign
Teaching note
Same six-movement arc. Preview the sign's signature: pride, self-reliance, command, a refusal of servility — and Mars as the full yogakāraka (as in Cancer). Note the recurring marriage-difficulty theme (7th = Saturn, the Sun's 'enemy son').
Simmam at a glance
Symbol
சிங்கம் — the Lion (four-legged). Hence 'Leo'.
Element / class
Fire-natured · cruel (krūra) / malefic sign · barren, manly, waterless
Modality
Sthira (ஸ்திர · fixed) · Oja (odd) · male sign
Order & body
5th sign of the zodiac · signifies the flank / upper belly (விலா)
Ruler / dignities
Sun (சூரியன்) — its only own sign, with mūlatrikoṇa here · none exalted/debilitated
Direction / colour
East (கிழக்கு) · red/rose · strong by day · śīrṣodaya (head-rising)
Teaching note
Anchor the image: the lion, fire, the Sun, kingship, the upper belly. Fixed + fire + Sun predicts a proud, self-respecting, self-reliant, commanding nature that will not stoop or be servile. Note it's a day-strong, head-rising (śīrṣodaya) sign — stronger by day, like Gemini, unlike the earlier movable signs.
Planetary dignities in Simmam
| Graha | Dignity / role | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (சூரியன்) | Own sign + mūlatrikoṇa | Lord of the Lagna; Leo is its only own house |
| Mars (செவ்வாய்) | Friend · full yogakāraka | Owns a kendra (4) + trikoṇa (9) — the great yoga-giver |
| Jupiter (குரு) | Friend · half-yogakāraka | 5th trikoṇa + 8th → 'half' yoga-giver |
| Moon · Mercury | Friends | Benign here (Mercury: neutral in the strict scheme) |
| Ven·Sat·Rahu·Ketu | Enmity — பகை | All four take enmity; may be called malefics |
Teaching note
Backbone table. Headline: Mars is the FULL yogakāraka for Leo (owns kendra 4 + trikoṇa 9) — the same royal-warrior gift as in Cancer. No planet is exalted/debilitated here. The author calls Mercury a friend; note the strict classical scheme makes Mercury neutral to the Sun. Venus and Saturn are the enemies.
The Leo house map & its doṣas
| House | Rāśi | Lord |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leo | Sun |
| 2 | Virgo | Mercury |
| 3 | Libra | Venus |
| 4 | Scorpio | Mars |
| 5 | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| 6 | Capricorn | Saturn |
| 7 | Aquarius | Saturn |
| 8 | Pisces | Jupiter |
| 9 | Aries | Mars |
| 10 | Taurus | Venus |
| 11 | Gemini | Mercury |
| 12 | Cancer | Moon |
Full yogakāraka
Mars (4th kendra + 9th trikoṇa) is the great yogakāraka. Jupiter (5th + 8th) is a 'half' yoga-giver.
Bādhaka — 9th
Fixed signs take the 9th as bādhaka; Mars is bādhakādhipati, but its yogakāraka role largely does good.
Māraka — author's note
The author names the 3rd & 8th (Venus, Jupiter). Standard texts use the 2nd & 7th (Mercury, Saturn).
The marriage note
The 7th is Saturn's house, the Sun's 'enemy son' — so the wife often doesn't turn out satisfying.
Teaching note
Internalise the lordships. Mars owning 4+9 makes it the yogakāraka (mitigating its 9th-house bādhaka role too). As in Rishabam/Mithunam, flag the author's non-standard māraka (3 & 8) vs the textbook 2 & 7. And the structural marriage-difficulty note — 7th = Saturn, the Sun's enemy — recurs through the chapter.
What Simmam governs (kārakatva)
Kingship & valour
The Kshatriya; ruby & gems; hunting; victory in war; leadership & administration; briskness and swift action
Fire & mountain
Firewood, dried trees, electricity, wool; forest herbs; goods grown on mountains; self-grown groves & forest creatures
Food & goods
Six-taste & non-veg food; fruit-juices; dried fruits; leather; jaggery & rock-candy; copper; medicine (incl. allopathy)
Body & health
The upper belly & flank; pitta/heat — indigestion, jaundice, migraine, eye-burning, piles; a hot constitution
Teaching note
The through-line is the Sun and the lion: kingship, valour, hunting, leadership, fire, gems, and medicine. Very different from the Moon's watery Cancer. The health cluster is pitta/heat and the upper belly — recurring in every planet section as the 'hot constitution'.
Places ruled by Simmam
Within Bhārat
North Gujarat · the Western Ghats · Himachal Pradesh · Telangana (Andhra) · Rayalaseema · Bombay · Nasik · hills around Poona · the Satpura range · north of the Vindhyas · Malwa
Around the world
France · north America (Chicago) · the Congo (Africa) · Italy · Romania · NW Pakistan · the Amazon region
Teaching note
Used in mundane and relocation work. The common thread is dry, mountainous, forested land — the lion's terrain, and fitting a waterless fire sign. Continues the foreign-naming thread (Leyam) from the earlier signs.
Classical view · two authorities
Phaladīpikā
Reddish eyes; a broad face & wide mouth; proud, with an "I am someone" feeling; valorous; angry without cause; fond of forests & mountains; separated from the mother; of firm intellect.
Satyāchārya
Of hard intellect; fond of meat; excess pitta; suffers losses yet has many undertakings; miserly but good-natured; fame-gaining; grieved over siblings; valorous; many wives; ailments of knees & teeth.
Teaching note
Read as period portraits. Both catch the proud, valorous, self-important, quick-tempered royal nature, and the mother-separation and sibling-grief motifs. The 'many undertakings but losses' note fits the ambitious, sometimes over-reaching lion.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
Eats much; fond of temple abhiṣeka; of a benevolent heart; great hunger; courageous; of undiminished wisdom; bent on curing any disease at once and doing any task at once.
fever
fever
fever
Teaching note
Note the 'benevolent heart, great hunger, cures disease at once, does any task at once' — the generous, decisive, appetite-driven lion. Treat the fever-hardship ages and death-timing as illustrative classical material.
From experience · the lion
Acts by its own counsel
Decides and acts on its own judgment; helps only the worthy; thoroughly dislikes sluggards; honest and word-keeping.
The lion hunts its own food
Holds labour as chief; dislikes eating by another's toil; stands on its own feet and won't seek borrowed support.
Bold, but not the aggressor
Faces anything boldly, fears nothing; won't start a fight but won't drop one that comes; tests before trusting.
Puts itself first
Esteems the father; shy in approaching women, connecting only when a woman holds on — and withdrawing once the purpose is served.
Teaching note
The author's 'lion' portrait — proud, self-reliant, self-respecting, bold, and refusing servility. The 'hunts its own food, never eats a fallen creature' image is the heart of it. Present the reserve-then-withdraw pattern with women descriptively.
From experience · honour, temper, appetite
Settle it now
Consistent, pure-hearted, and openly expressive; anger flares and fades; no hidden grudge — everything settled then and there ('cash on hand').
Do not provoke
Not easily emotional — but provoked, they raise an uproar. Very reluctant to borrow, for fear a creditor might demand payment before others.
Honour above all
Cannot bear a word that touches their honour; act cautiously in public; won't easily be caught in trouble.
Appetite & health
Fond of six-taste, spicy, non-veg food, eaten without shyness; so indigestion & pitta troubles — jaundice, anaemia, migraine, piles.
Teaching note
The other half: the settle-it-now directness, the horror of a public debt, the sensitivity to honour, and the hearty appetite that brings pitta trouble. 'Do not provoke the lion' is the memorable teaching line. The marriage-difficulty (7th = Saturn) is channelled into earning instead.
The Nine Planets
in Simmam
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Leo native
Sūrya · Candra · Kuja · Budha · Guru · Śukra · Śani · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Into the practical core. Remind students: the Sun (lord), Mars (full yogakāraka), Mercury and Jupiter shine; Venus is comfort-driven; Saturn drags the sign down (its opposite nature). No planet is exalted/debilitated, so lordship and placement do the work.
Sun (Sūrya)
Lord · own sign + mūlatrikoṇa
- Hot-tempered, dismissive of others, self-important — 'nothing can be done without me' — with excessive self-confidence.
- But if they fail, they don't tire — they try again and again, determined to win; of good earning ability; brisk and precise.
- Non-servile: they finish tasks but won't be subservient; hair greys or balds early; heat-troubles (brain, piles, liver, pitta).
- Strive tirelessly for a high state; of much desire but won't wander for it; hot constitution → incomplete satisfaction, unfretted.
Teaching note
The Sun in its own sign — the pure royal ego: proud, self-reliant, tireless, non-servile. Emphasise the 'try again until I win' persistence and the refusal to serve. The hot-constitution desire note recurs across the fire-sign planets.
Moon (Candra)
Friend · 12th lord
- Waxing Moon: good mental courage and firm action; very tactful; successful, unafraid of expense; live for the present.
- Fickle over women and free-spending for pleasure — but of good earning strength; much affection for the household's women; precise.
- Somewhat hot-tempered; don't forget those who harmed them (though they don't take revenge).
- Waning Moon: easily emotional, quick to anger, heedless speech, spendthrift; fond of fish & fowl; borrow even to win women's esteem; initial vigour declines.
Teaching note
The waxing/waning split again — waxing = courageous and tactful; waning = heedless and spendthrift. Always check the Moon's phase. As 12th lord it also colours the pleasure-and-expense theme.
Mars (Kuja)
Friend · full yogakāraka · 4th & 9th
- The full yogakāraka (kendra 4 + trikoṇa 9): of good professional strength and earning; prefers deeds that win fame.
- But very intense anger — provoked, they lose all sense and may even strike; yet forget it at once and return to normal.
- Fearless; act with a distinctive individuality; position, responsibility and public service seek them, discharged skilfully, without profit-seeking.
- Enthusiastic in heroic deeds and sport; of much desire but incomplete satisfaction (hot constitution) → seek others, contract diseases, conceal it.
Teaching note
Mars is the FULL yogakāraka for Leo (owns 4+9) — the royal-warrior gift, same as in Cancer but here undebilitated. The reading is fame, command, courage — with the caution of fierce, blinding anger that passes as fast as it comes.
Mercury (Budha)
Friend · 2nd & 11th
- The 2nd-lord (dhana) in the Lagna gives excellent skill, intelligence and good anticipatory power; eager to know everything.
- Details at the fingertips; quick understanding and swift, seldom-wrong decisions; great cautious conduct.
- Masters of speech — hard to trap, quick to slip free; good earning ability, money always circulating around them.
- Good artistic knowledge; of much desire (relishing & spending on women); attractive by dress & speech; arrange a good life by any means.
Teaching note
Mercury is a friend/benefic here (2nd lord of wealth in the Lagna) — sharp intellect, eloquence, and easy money. A genuinely strong, resourceful placement. This sets up the Budha-Āditya yoga (Sun+Mercury) in the conjunctions.
Jupiter (Guru)
Friend · half-yogakāraka · 5th & 8th
- Cannot be underestimated: very magnanimous, detail-knowing, enthusiastic even in small matters, free of laziness.
- Their 'big-man' bearing serves them well — a fear-mixed respect arises at the sight of them, and their authoritative speech is obeyed.
- Inclined to public service & divine works; position and fame seek them, used well and without profit-seeking; selfless, charitable.
- Honour jñānis, scholars and great men; though fickle over women, keep it very discreetly hidden and never compromise their honour.
Teaching note
Jupiter is a half-yogakāraka (5th trikoṇa + 8th) — a commanding, dignified, magnanimous presence whose very bearing wins deference. The 'fear-mixed respect' and 'authoritative speech' notes are pure royal Leo. Sets up the excellent Sun+Jupiter conjunction.
Venus (Śukra)
Enemy · 3rd & 10th
- Of excellent professional strength and the power to finish tasks; always spotless in neat clothes, ornaments, perfumes.
- Especially try to attract women; love the wife yet dominate her; while controlled by her, form ties with other women unknown to her.
- Every night the wife must be beside them; they use both wife and others, spending on them without hesitation.
- Must live comfortably and get every pleasure; hardship sours their face (even walking is a strain — must go by vehicle); not miserly.
Teaching note
Venus is an enemy (3rd & 10th) but still gives professional strength and a strong comfort-and-pleasure drive. The reading is luxury, aesthetics, and the marriage-plus-others theme. Present the desire material as the text's framing.
Saturn (Śani)
Enemy · 6th & 7th
- Not special — Saturn reduces all of Simmam's distinctions; the naturally brisk native becomes a sluggard.
- Careless, doing nothing responsibly; irritable over trifles; impatient; idling without direction and poking into needless trouble.
- No zeal to earn; some live off the wife's earnings and are demeaned, losing Simmam's greatness.
- Bad company breeds bad habits; desire low-class women's ties; suffer women-related diseases through excess — no good state to expect.
Teaching note
Saturn is an enemy (6th & 7th) and works directly against the sign's brisk, proud nature — turning the lion into a lethargic, discontented figure. This is the sharpest 'planet opposite to the sign's nature' case in the chapter.
Rahu (Rāhu)
Surface-skimming, money-driven.
- Mostly surface-skimmers who act as if they know everything, without good thought or action.
- To earn money they take any path — mostly crooked ones, fights, cheating-work; no clean speech or integrity; low-class ties.
- A great desire to get rich fast through gambling, speculation, horse-racing, lottery and treasure-hunting.
- For some, ties with widows and high-living women; their desire is excessive.
Teaching note
Rahu is an enemy here — the reading is a thick-skinned, money-at-any-cost, gambling-and-crooked-ways type. The cautionary node for Leo; present descriptively.
Ketu (Ketu)
Cautious, deceiving, occult-edged.
- Good subject-knowledge; very cautious and alert even in small matters; hard to deceive — but deceivers of others.
- Every crooked path at their fingertips, used only when needed; 'nothing can be extracted from them'.
- If trusted they do good; those who distrust them they entangle and watch sink; of god-devotion, yet fierce-deity or spirit contact.
- Won't seek women but make women seek them; generally their functioning is unsatisfying and topsy-turvy.
Teaching note
Ketu is an enemy here — the sharp, secretive, hard-to-read, occult-tinged type, loyal to the trusting and dangerous to the distrusting. The mantra/spirit motif recurs across the nodes. Present descriptively.
Conjunctions
in Simmam
The Sun joined with each planet — including the wise-and-eloquent Budha-Āditya
Sun+Mars · Sun+Mercury (Budha-Āditya) · Sun+Jupiter
Teaching note
The Sun is the lord, so the author frames combinations as 'Sun with X'. Preview: Sun+Mars, Sun+Mercury (Budha-Āditya) and Sun+Jupiter are the bright ones; Sun+Saturn and the nodes are the difficult ones.
Sun + Moon · Sun + Mars
Sun + Moon
Astonishing skill; everything done with forethought; if they fail, they grieve but try again and win. Foodies (fond of fish); very quick to anger but forgetting at once; of much desire. As this falls near the new moon, the body runs hot 15 days, cool 15 — so allergy troubles; keen to advance, somewhat free-spending.
Sun + Mars
A special state: always brisk, of good administrative ability — an authority in their speech that makes subordinates fear them — with high earning. Attached to mother, siblings, father, but give the wife little importance; two fiery planets → hot constitution, so they compensate through earning. Foremost in public service, politics, divine works; fame-loving, keen on sport.
Teaching note
Sun+Mars (both fiery, Mars the yogakāraka) gives commanding administrative power and high earning, at the cost of warmth toward the wife. Sun+Moon gives skill and drive but an uneven hot/cool constitution. Both are strong, active configurations for the royal sign.
Sun + Mercury · Sun + Jupiter
Sun + Mercury (Budha-Āditya)
A very lofty configuration: the 2nd-lord Mercury with the Sun gives immense skill, good professional profit and easy money-circulation; much subject-knowledge; masters of speech who win by talk yet keep their word; keen over (only quality) women; artistic, sociable, not miserly, clean in their ways.
Sun + Jupiter
Truly a lofty configuration: big, honourable men who won't do petty deeds or keep low company, achieving from where they sit; of administrative ability; selfless and public-minded; devout, doing divine works in the forefront; compassionate; position and fame seek them without their wandering; honour kept, desire discreet.
Teaching note
The two brightest Sun conjunctions. Budha-Āditya (Sun+Mercury) = the classic wise-and-eloquent combination, here with the wealth-lord. Sun+Jupiter = the noble, dignified, dharmic leader. Both keep honour and discretion — very royal Leo.
Sun + Venus · Sun + Saturn
Sun + Venus
Proud, pompous, spending to be praised; of good professional strength (earning won't lack); free-spending, especially on women; high desire. With the pleasure-lord in the Lagna, 'enjoy while you can, O king' — but mostly out of tune with the wife, so they seek many women. Fire (Sun) meets water (Venus) → problems in sexual matters and incomplete satisfaction; yet a comfortable life.
Sun + Saturn
Cannot be called satisfying: contradictions even in speech; no self-confidence; concern and enthusiasm fade — careless, irritable, jumping up over trifles; bad habits and company arising of themselves. Through their low mentality even a beautiful wife seems ugly; mostly this affects their mental state, making them sluggards, all hesitation and timidity, life a burden.
Teaching note
Sun+Venus is comfort-and-pleasure driven with a fire-water clash in sexual matters; Sun+Saturn is the dispiriting combination — father and son, enemies — that undermines the sign's confidence and turns the lion timid. Handle the desire material as the text's framing.
Sun + Rahu · Sun + Ketu
Sun + Rahu
Not a good state — reduces Simmam's greatness; crooked paths and crooked intellect; a craze to earn by any means, careless how; cheating-work and base gambling-ways; fear and submit to no one; no clean speech, integrity or trust; empty promises; obstinate, back-to-front action; very bad in women-matters; bad company arising of itself.
Sun + Ketu
Also not satisfying: cunning intellect and sharp knowledge turned to every crooked, well-planned, uncaught way; skilled at learning others' weaknesses and subduing them; make others believe they have great skills and catch them in their net; very stingy, getting all done at others' expense; use low women for their own advancement.
Teaching note
The nodal conjunctions with the lord Sun corrupt the royal nature — Rahu = money-crazed and crooked, Ketu = cunning and manipulative. The cautionary counterpart to the Mars/Mercury/Jupiter brilliance. Present descriptively.
The multi-planet combines
With the Sun + Moon
+Mars: professional distinction, command, sport, family — honour never risked. +Mercury: immense knowledge, big profit from small effort, easy wins. +Jupiter: very special — noble, devout, just, honoured. +Venus: flawless — influence, comfort, pleasure.
Weaker Sun+Moon mixes
+Saturn: spoils the elevations; no satisfying wife; irresponsible; low-class ties. +Rahu: contradictory, bad/crooked ways, money the only aim. +Ketu: hard-pressing, unfathomable, 'one thing in, another out'.
The Mars/Jupiter combines
Moon+Mars+Jupiter special; Moon+Mars+Mercury flawless; Moon+Mars+Venus keeps comfort but heavy spending; Moon+Mars+Saturn breeds quarrels. Mars+Jupiter+Mercury/Venus flawless (high status, hidden private trouble).
The middling & weak
Mars+Jupiter+Saturn/nodes middling; Jupiter+Mercury+Venus good; Jupiter+Mercury+Saturn & Jupiter+nodes not special; Jupiter+Venus+Saturn & the Saturn-node mixes unsatisfying.
Teaching note
Summarise the author's combine guidance in four buckets. Headline: the Sun with the benefics (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Moon, Venus) lifts to command and honour; Saturn and the nodes drag toward lethargy, crookedness and instability. The Mars-and-Jupiter combines are consistently strong.
Putting it together
"The lion hunts its own food and never eats a fallen creature — so the Leo native stands on its own feet, and will not be servile."
Leo in one line: the Sun's proud, self-reliant, commanding fire — its warrior-strength carried by Mars, the full yogakāraka.
No planet is exalted or debilitated here — the sign gives one steady result; Saturn is its clearest undoing. Confirm with the whole chart.
Teaching note
Close the analytic arc. The Leo lesson: a proud, self-reliant, commanding fire sign whose strength is carried by Mars (the full yogakāraka) and whose clearest undoing is Saturn. Reiterate: single-factor readings are indicative; confirm with strength, aspects, vargas, daśā.
Key takeaways
Simmam = fixed, fiery, Sun-ruled — proud, self-reliant, commanding, non-servile.
The Sun's only own sign, with mūlatrikoṇa here; no planet is exalted or debilitated.
Mars owns a kendra (4) + trikoṇa (9) — the great yogakāraka, as in Cancer.
Sun, Mars, Mercury & Jupiter shine; Venus is comfort-driven; Saturn drags the sign down.
A structural marriage-difficulty (7th = Saturn, the Sun's enemy) — channelled into earning.
Bright: Budha-Āditya (Sun+Mercury) & Sun+Jupiter; do not provoke the lion — confirm with the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap — have students say each back. The two things to remember: Mars is the full yogakāraka (as in Cancer), and Saturn — the 7th/6th enemy lord — is the sign's clearest undoing.
End of Chapter 5
Simmam · Leo
Next in the series: Kanni (Virgo) — dual, ruler Mercury, where Mercury is exalted in its own sign.
