கன்னிKanni — Virgo
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Chapter 6: the Kanni (Virgo) Ascendant — Mercury's own sign, and the one place a planet holds THREE strengths at once (Mercury: rulership + exaltation + mūlatrikoṇa). An earth sign of the maiden: clever, articulate, refined, self-interested. Same study method; confirm against the whole chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, dignities (Mercury's triple strength, Venus debilitated), significations, places
House map & doṣas
Lordships for a Virgo chart, plus the māraka and bādhaka picture
The native's portrait
Three classical texts + the author's 'clever maiden' reading
Nine planets
Mercury, Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — each alone
Conjunctions
The Sun with each graha, and the multi-planet combines
Synthesis
Bhadra yoga, the triple-yoga combine, and reading the maiden
Teaching note
Same six-movement arc. Preview the two headline features: Mercury's unique triple strength (making Mercury-in-Lagna a Bhadra yoga strong enough on its own), and the Mercury+Moon+Venus triple-yoga conjunction. Note Venus is debilitated here.
Kanni at a glance
Symbol
பெண் — the Maiden. A biped 'human' sign. Hence 'Virgo'.
Element / class
Earth-natured · saumya (benign) · barren · an ātma-jñāna (self-knowledge) sign
Modality
Ubhaya (உபய · dual) · Yugma (even) · female sign
Order & body
6th sign of the zodiac · signifies the abdomen, small intestine & waist
Ruler / dignities
Mercury (புதன்) — rules, is exalted, AND has mūlatrikoṇa here; Venus debilitated
Direction / colour
South (தெற்கு) · olive/light green · strong by day · śīrṣodaya
Teaching note
Anchor the image: the maiden, earth, Mercury, the abdomen. Dual + earth + Mercury predicts a clever, adaptable, articulate, refined, service-and-detail nature. The headline dignity fact — Mercury's THREE strengths in one sign — sets up why Virgo is Mercury's finest home.
Planetary dignities in Kanni
| Graha | Dignity / role | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury (புதன்) | Rules + Exalted + Mūlatrikoṇa | THREE strengths in one sign — unique to Mercury here |
| Venus (சுக்கிரன்) | Debilitation — நீசம் · yet yogakāraka | 2nd & 9th lord (owns a trine), but nīca reduces it |
| Saturn (சனி) | Friend · yogakāraka | 5th & 6th lord (owns the 5th trine) — a benefic here |
| Sun · Rahu · Ketu | Act as friends | Functionally friendly to the Virgo native |
| Moon (சந்திரன்) | Neutral (samam) | Mercury sees the Moon as foe, not the reverse — net neutral |
| Mars · Jupiter | Enemies / malefic | Mars (3&8) and Jupiter (4&7, bādhaka) turn malefic here |
Teaching note
Backbone table. Headline: Mercury's THREE strengths in Virgo — a distinction no other planet has anywhere. Venus is the great irony here: a yogakāraka (owns the 9th trine) but debilitated. Saturn is the other yoga-giver. Note the one-way Mercury-Moon enmity nets the Moon to neutral.
The Virgo house map & its doṣas
| House | Rāśi | Lord |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Virgo | Mercury |
| 2 | Libra | Venus |
| 3 | Scorpio | Mars |
| 4 | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| 5 | Capricorn | Saturn |
| 6 | Aquarius | Saturn |
| 7 | Pisces | Jupiter |
| 8 | Aries | Mars |
| 9 | Taurus | Venus |
| 10 | Gemini | Mercury |
| 11 | Cancer | Moon |
| 12 | Leo | Sun |
Yoga-givers
Venus (2nd+9th, owns the 9th trine) & Saturn (5th+6th, owns the 5th trine) are the yogakārakas — though Venus is debilitated.
Mercury's triple strength
Lord of the 1st & 10th; in the Lagna it rules, exalts, holds mūlatrikoṇa AND gets Dik bala — a Bhadra yoga.
Bādhaka — 7th
Dual signs take the 7th as bādhaka; Jupiter is bādhakādhipati (and a māraka lord).
Māraka — author's note
The author names Moon & Jupiter (11th & 7th). Standard texts use the 2nd & 7th (Venus & Jupiter).
Teaching note
Internalise the lordships. Mercury owns the 1st & 10th and is supreme in its own Lagna. Venus & Saturn own the trines (9th, 5th) = yoga-givers. As before, flag the author's non-standard māraka (11 & 7) vs the textbook 2 & 7; bādhaka = 7th is correct for a dual sign.
What Kanni governs (kārakatva)
Mind & arts
Poetry, sculpture, painting, Tamil scholarship; mathematics, jyotiṣa, physiognomy; the 'camphor-mind'; accountancy & deduction; eloquence, stage-oratory, wit
Commerce & guile
The Vaiśya; broking, agency, accountancy; gambling; guile; earning through women; procuring; mantra-craft, indrajāla, tantra
Beauty & goods
Emerald; parks, orchards, entertainment halls; decorative & fine-art goods; palaces; refinement; appearing spotlessly clean
Body & health
The abdomen, small intestine & waist — indigestion, gastric/peptic ulcer, lumbago, gout/knee-vāta
Teaching note
The through-line is Mercury refined by an earth sign: intellect, arts, language, accountancy, commerce — with an honest thread of guile, gambling and the entertainment/vice trades. The health cluster is the digestive mid-region. All recur in the planet sections.
Places ruled by Kanni
Within Bhārat
North Punjab · east of the Narmada · Haryana · Nasik · Ajanta · Marathwada · south of Jammu-Kashmir · the Ravi-Beas banks · Rayalaseema · Rajahmundry · Kakinada
Around the world
Greece · central Italy · Turkey · Paris · Brazil · New York · Los Angeles · cities, parks & entertainment districts
Teaching note
Used in mundane and relocation work. The thread is urban, riverine, and entertainment-district land — fitting the sociable, commercial, arts-loving sign. Continues the foreign-naming thread (Pātāḷam).
Classical view · two authorities
Phaladīpikā
Sloping shoulders & long arms; enjoys others' goods, house & wealth; mind absorbed in the śāstras; pleasant speech; gently-moving eyes; attached to the enjoyment of women; beautiful children.
Satyāchārya
Speaks lovingly; attractive; long arms & legs; an auspicious look mixing sin & merit; good wealth-comfort; miserly; good with relatives; many daughters; quarrels with siblings; finishes tasks with little effort.
Teaching note
Read as period portraits. Both catch the articulate, refined, wealth-comfortable, relative-minded nature — and the 'enjoys others' goods / mixed sin-and-merit' honesty about self-interest. The maiden's grace with a shrewd core.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
One whom all rejoice to see; of never-diminishing observances; a discoverer of novel things; in his last years, a mind set on accumulating wealth.
fire
fever
smallpox / disease
Teaching note
Note 'discoverer of novel things' and 'last-years wealth-accumulation' — the inventive, acquisitive Mercury mind. Treat the age-dangers and death-timing as illustrative classical material.
From experience · the clever maiden
The honey tongue
Very clever & sweet-spoken — 'honey in the talk'; precise, witty, teasing, faintly desire-laden; always spotless in neat dress & perfume.
The chameleon
Adapts to place & person; makes an enemy of no one; charms even hostility 'into the pocket'; a woman's touch must fall on them as they talk.
The artist
Immense artistic knowledge & skill — story-writers, poets, sculptors, dancers; deep in mathematics, jyotiṣa & physiognomy; the 'camphor-mind' that grasps at once.
The shrewd core
Cautious, hard to deceive, slipping out of any tangle; self-interested tigers; money the only aim, and it need not come by a proper road.
Teaching note
The author's vivid portrait — charm, articulacy, artistry, adaptability, and a shrewd, self-interested core. The 'honey tongue' and 'chameleon' images are the heart of it. Present the desire/entertainment-trade material descriptively as the source's framing.
From experience · work, taste, desire
Self-made & self-employed
Mostly self-employed; adept as agents, representatives, administrators, accountants; win others by speech & debate; carry a high bearing.
Refined taste
Refined even in eating — never gluttons, eating in measure, but unable to bear hunger; suffer vāta, joint pain, indigestion, gastric ulcer, pitta.
King or queen of desire
Both men & women of strong desire who relish pleasure; often a beautiful build; good enjoyers of comfort.
Live, don't grieve
Their creed: life is for living, not for worry or grief — money must come somehow, and comfort is the goal.
Teaching note
The other half: the self-made professional, the refined taste (with its digestive price), the strong desire, and the 'live, don't grieve' creed. Handle the desire material maturely as the text's framing. This is a female sign, so the author includes strong strī descriptions throughout.
The Nine Planets
in Kanni
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Virgo native
Budha · Sūrya · Candra · Kuja · Guru · Śukra · Śani · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Into the practical core. Remind students: Mercury (lord) is supreme here (triple strength + Bhadra yoga); Saturn is a good yoga-giver; Venus is a debilitated yoga-giver; Mars & Jupiter trouble the sign. Sun/Rahu/Ketu behave usefully.
Mercury (Budha)
Lord · triple strength · Bhadra yoga
- Three strengths at once — rulership, exaltation, mūlatrikoṇa — plus Dik bala and Bhadra yoga; no other planet gets this in one house.
- Mercury alone in Kanni, unafflicted, is enough by itself for distinction and elevation.
- Very special sharpness of intellect, cleverness and skill; attractive appearance & speech come of their own; no falling short in the art of love.
- Won't fail to give standing in life — a 'many-trade king' able to succeed in any occupation.
Teaching note
The strongest lord placement in the whole book — Mercury's triple strength + Bhadra yoga. Emphasise that here the lord alone can carry the chart. A woman, the author adds, is surely beautiful and refined, 'telling a thousand tales with her eyes'.
Sun (Sūrya)
Friend · 12th lord
- As 12th (vyaya) lord: haste, carelessness, irresponsibility, free spending — but not lazy; lacking thrift.
- The 12th is the bed/rest house — much fondness for bed-pleasure and good sleep; daily need a woman's company for contented rest.
- A hot planet: satisfaction not sudden — more than one union needed; ties with other women, spent on freely.
- Yet money keeps coming for their expenses; mostly no shortage — but never a fully contented life.
Teaching note
The Sun rules the 12th (loss/bed) for Virgo, so the reading is spending, sleep and bed-pleasure, with money still flowing. Note the recurring 'never fully content' theme — comfort without contentment.
Moon (Candra)
Neutral · 11th lord
- Waxing Moon is the better state — attraction and affection (mother, sisters, love for the wife); other women charmed by them.
- Sweet speech and word-magic charm everyone (the author recalls the Moon-Tārā-Budha story).
- Because Mercury sees the Moon as foe but the Moon does not, a waxing Moon here does no harm — giving comforts, opportunities, knowledge, gains.
- A waning Moon: fickle, unsteady, uncontrolled with women and reckless in spending on them — yet not touching their own income.
Teaching note
The one-way Mercury-Moon enmity is the key: a waxing Moon is benign here, a waning one destabilising. Always check the phase. The Moon-Tārā myth is a nice moment on why Mercury and the Moon are entangled.
Mars (Kuja)
Enemy · 3rd & 8th
- Certainly not special — a jyotiṣa proverb warns of it; in transit it may go retrograde and stay 5+ months, said to bring famine, epidemic, quake, fire or flood.
- As 3rd & 8th lord it spoils results; the 3rd (bhoga/reproductive) brings excessive desire, dissatisfaction, indiscriminate ties and women-related diseases.
- In a female chart: illicit ties if the husband is unsatisfying.
- The commander-planet does nothing special in this gentle sign — creating obstinacy, roughness, hot temper and rashness. Judge carefully.
Teaching note
Mars is a functional malefic here (3rd & 8th) and the harshest single placement — the proverb 'Kanni-Mars dries the sea' captures it. The transit note is mundane-astrology lore. Judge any Kanni-Mars carefully.
Jupiter (Guru)
Enemy · 4th & 7th · bādhaka
- As 4th & 7th lord (a kendrādhipati) and bādhakādhipati, with Dik bala, it carries a strong kendrādhipati-doṣa.
- Gives arrogance, self-importance, pride-speech and a 'superiority complex' — dismissive of others, thinking they alone know everything.
- Āṣāḍha-bhūtis (hypocrites) — one way inside, another out; mostly get things done at others' expense; miserly.
- Keen (concealed) interest in other women; the wife dominates while they feign submission; sluggards whose big-man look is their whole 'plus point'.
Teaching note
Another 'benefic turned functional malefic' case (kendrādhipati-doṣa + bādhaka). The reading is arrogance and hypocrisy, not wisdom — reinforcing that functional nature depends on the Lagna, not the planet's reputation.
Venus (Śukra)
Debilitated · yogakāraka · 2nd & 9th
- The yogakāraka (2nd & 9th lord) is debilitated in Kanni, so its yoga-distinction is reduced.
- As the wealth-lord placed here it creates a perpetual shortage — big spenders for whom nothing is ever enough; pompous, living to be praised.
- Very bad in the matter of women (low-class company; deceiving even the wife they love — masqueraders).
- Unsteady, lazy, wanting quick riches by crooked ways (lottery, gambling, racing) — low family responsibility, wanting only a strain-free life.
Teaching note
The sign's central irony: Venus IS a yogakāraka (owns the 9th trine) but is DEBILITATED here — so the promise is undercut into shortage and restlessness. This is the flip side of Mercury's supremacy. Present the desire material as the text's framing.
Saturn (Śani)
Friend · yogakāraka · 5th & 6th
- A good state: good subject-knowledge, acting responsibly, with the power to finish what they take up.
- A helpful disposition; won't compromise their honour (spending even on borrowing to uphold it); inclined to public service & divine works, respected by others.
- Think and deliberate before acting; never overreach; do only what they can; respect others' good ideas.
- As 6th (roga) lord: indigestion, nerve weakness, joint/knee/ankle pains. In all, self-aware, patient people without haste.
Teaching note
Saturn owns the 5th trine here, so it's a benefic yoga-giver — steady, honest, responsible, the calm counterweight to Virgo's restlessness. A genuinely good single placement, unlike Saturn in Leo.
Rahu (Rāhu)
Shrewd and effective — kept in a good state.
- A state without much harm: good knowledge, knowing good & bad alike, acting to suit place and occasion.
- Good to the good; if roused, worse than the bad; won't harm on their own but will repay harm — 'Naṭarāja to those who trust, Yamarāja to those who don't'.
- Can walk the straight road and, when needed, take a crooked one to win; keep ties with the high while using the low; succeed in speculation.
- Unshaken by failure; bound by fairness yet not above injustice. Because they can act any way, Kanni-Rahu keeps them in a good state.
Teaching note
Unlike the enemy-node in some signs, Rahu is friendly-functioning here — shrewd, adaptable, effective, loyal to the trusting. The 'Naṭarāja/Yamarāja' line recurs from Mithunam — a memorable characterisation.
Ketu (Ketu)
Knowing, cautious, self-serving.
- Of immense knowledge and acquaintance with everything; hard to deceive; very cautious; analyze before acting.
- Hair-splitting debaters; self-interested — will change even a fair stance to suit themselves; preach to others while serving themselves.
- Will do anything to earn money; of good taste; win women easily; of excessive desire.
- Charm comfortable, beautiful women — using mantra & tantra for it; cannot bear others' prosperity.
Teaching note
Ketu here is the knowing, cautious, self-serving type with an occult edge — competent but jealous. Present the desire/mantra material descriptively. Rounds out a node-pair that behaves usefully for Virgo.
Conjunctions
in Kanni
The Sun joined with each planet — and a rare triple-yoga combine
Mercury + Moon + Venus → Dharma-karma + Neechabhaṅga + Bhadra yoga
Teaching note
The author frames the two-planet combos around the Sun; then the multi-planet combines. Preview the crown jewel: Mercury+Moon+Venus, which stacks three major yogas — with Saturn added, a veritable rāja yoga.
Sun + Moon · Sun + Mars
Sun + Moon
Good spenders, un-thrifty, spending freely for bed-pleasure — yet of good earning strength and brisk in work. Their creed: life is for relishing and enjoying. Fickle, frequently changing their thoughts; foodies; pitta & indigestion disorders, water-troubles and kapha diseases.
Sun + Mars
Cannot be called good in any way — roughness, hot temper and obstinacy that spoil Kanni's gentle nature, making them quarrelsome and big-spending. The 3rd-lord Mars with the 12th-lord Sun creates excessive desire needing daily union, yet never satisfying — and life runs on without control.
Teaching note
Sun+Moon = comfort-loving spenders with earning power; Sun+Mars = the harsh one, spoiling Virgo's gentleness and driving restless desire. The 3rd(Mars)+12th(Sun) combination is the mechanism behind the excessive-desire reading.
Sun + Mercury · Sun + Jupiter
Sun + Mercury (Budha-Āditya)
A tolerable-to-good state: good skill and sharp knowledge; do many occupations and earn well; spend freely for comfort; fond of spending on women — yet not wandering for them; women come to them, and being experts in love they give satisfying pleasure. They love the wife (who 'cannot keep up with their pace') and live respected by many.
Sun + Jupiter
Creates arrogance, dismissiveness and pride-speech ('nothing is impossible for us'); appear as big men but are masqueraders with no link between word and deed. They finish everything at others' expense; stand at the forefront of public service, politics, headmanship and divine works — always with a profit-eye; charm and dominate other women behind a big-man mask.
Teaching note
Sun+Mercury (Budha-Āditya) is the bright one — skilled, prosperous, respected. Sun+Jupiter, since Jupiter is a functional malefic here, reads as the arrogant, profit-seeking masquerader. A good contrast within the same Sun-conjunctions.
Sun + Venus · Sun + Saturn
Sun + Venus
Not special — poor relations with the father, and a strong bond to the wife, whose 'feed' for their desire-hunger wins them over; all family responsibility and income pass to her, and even small expenses depend on her hand. Drawn to other women but watched, so when a chance comes they pounce like a hungry tiger and slip away.
Sun + Saturn
Not special — father and son, mutual enemies, who spoil the Kanni-native; the two inauspicious lordships combine and the 5th-house distinction is lost; endless spending makes them debtors. 'See it and enjoy it', with no discipline or thrift — very base with women (low-class ties and disease), careless and lazy, wanting money by crooked ways.
Teaching note
Both difficult. Sun+Venus is the wife-dominated, desire-driven one; Sun+Saturn (father-son enemies) undermines the 5th house and breeds debt and low-class ties. Handle the desire material as the text's framing.
Sun + Rahu · Sun + Ketu
Sun + Rahu
Not special — hard-to-fathom 'pressure-people' whose nature and actions none can guess; ready for anything, going by any path, money their only aim regardless of the road — even counterfeit notes, smuggling and drugs. Honesty and trust are not seen in their life, yet money keeps coming, and they live a 'jolly' life careless of thrift.
Sun + Ketu
A strange state — even their maker can't figure them out; strange siddhas who change with place and occasion; adept cheats and tricksters who 'get in and out where even smoke can't', deceiving even those most cautious with them. Not trustworthy.
Teaching note
The nodal conjunctions with the Sun corrupt it — Rahu = money-at-any-cost (even illegal), Ketu = unfathomable trickster. The cautionary end of the Sun-conjunction spectrum. Present descriptively.
The multi-planet combines
Mercury + Moon + Venus — very special: a very high life, stacking Dharmakarmādhipati + Neechabhaṅga + Bhadra yogas. Add Saturn → a veritable rāja yoga.
The favourable combines
Mercury+Venus+Saturn, Mercury+Moon+Saturn give good; Moon+Mercury, Mercury+Venus, Mercury+Saturn are special; Moon+Mercury gives a wealth-yoga, a beautiful wife and gains through her.
The Sun-led combines
Sun+Moon+Mercury is special (skill, earning, respect). Sun+Moon+Mars → temper & low-class ties; Sun+Moon+Saturn → ups and downs; Sun+Moon+nodes not special.
The Mars/Jupiter combines
Mars+Mercury+Venus keeps comfort but spoils character; Mars+Saturn+Jupiter → big-man masqueraders; Mars+Saturn+Mercury elevates but troubles the mind; +Jupiter → high place but self-serving.
The worst combine
Sun+Mars+Rahu/Ketu (esp. with Mercury) — every crooked path, smuggling, cut/burn injuries, and turning women to prostitution: the worst combine for Kanni.
Teaching note
The crown jewel first: Mercury+Moon+Venus stacks THREE major yogas (dharma-karma, neechabhaṅga — cancelling Venus's debilitation — and Bhadra), and Saturn added makes it a rāja yoga. Then the tiers down to the worst combine (Sun+Mars+nodes+Mercury). This is the richest yoga chapter after Cancer.
Putting it together
"With Mercury's triple strength, the Lagna lord alone can carry the chart — what more does the Virgo native need for elevation?"
Virgo in one line: Mercury's refined, articulate, analytical earth — strongest of all, its lord holding three dignities at home.
The irony: Venus, its yogakāraka, is debilitated. Watch the Moon's phase and the co-planet. Confirm with the whole chart.
Teaching note
Close the arc. The Virgo lesson: the lord Mercury is at its strongest here (triple strength + Bhadra), so the sign's foundation is exceptionally sound — even as its yogakāraka Venus is debilitated. Reiterate: single-factor readings are indicative; confirm with strength, aspects, vargas, daśā.
Key takeaways
Kanni = dual, earthy, Mercury-ruled — clever, articulate, refined, self-interested.
Mercury holds THREE strengths here (rules + exalted + mūlatrikoṇa) — unique in the zodiac.
Mercury-in-Lagna is a Bhadra yoga, strong enough to carry the chart alone.
Venus (yogakāraka) is debilitated; Saturn is the steady yoga-giver; Mars & Jupiter turn malefic.
The crown combine: Mercury+Moon+Venus = dharma-karma + neechabhaṅga + Bhadra (+Saturn → rāja yoga).
Watch the Moon's phase and the co-planet's nature — confirm with the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap — have students say each back. The two to remember: Mercury's unique triple strength (its finest home), and the Mercury+Moon+Venus triple-yoga combine that even cancels Venus's debilitation.
End of Chapter 6
