துலாம்Thulām — Libra
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Chapter 7: the Thulām (Libra) Ascendant — Venus's own airy, cardinal sign, "the scales." Its headline is SATURN: exalted here and owning the 4th & 5th, Saturn is a full yogakāraka — the fearsome planet turned the sign's greatest friend. The Sun is debilitated; Venus holds mūlatrikoṇa. Same study method; confirm against the whole chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, dignities (Saturn exalted & yogakāraka, Sun debilitated), significations, places
House map & doṣas
Lordships for a Libra chart, plus the māraka and bādhaka picture
The native's portrait
Three classical texts + the author's 'scales that weigh at a glance' reading
Nine planets
Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — each alone
Conjunctions
The Sun with each graha, and the multi-planet combines
Synthesis
The exalted-Saturn yoga, the good combines, and reading the scales
Teaching note
Same six-movement arc. Preview the two headline features: Saturn exalted here is a full yogakāraka (the fearsome planet turned friend), and the Sun is debilitated. Note the planet order starts with Venus, the lagna lord.
Thulām at a glance
Symbol
தராசு — the Scales. The one inanimate sign; hence 'Libra'.
Element / class
Air-natured (vāyu) · saumya (benign) · a viśva, śāstra & ātma-jñāna sign · dry
Modality
Chara (சர · movable/cardinal) · ōja (odd) · male sign
Order & body
7th sign of the zodiac · signifies the lower abdomen & large intestine
Ruler / dignities
Venus (சுக்கிரன்) rules & holds mūlatrikoṇa; Saturn exalted; Sun debilitated
Direction / colour
West (மேற்கு) · white · strong by day · śīrṣodaya
Teaching note
Anchor the image: the scales, air, Venus, the lower abdomen. Cardinal + air + Venus predicts a balancing, sociable, refined, justice-minded, relationship-focused nature. The headline dignity fact — Saturn EXALTED here (and yogakāraka) — sets up why the Libra chart has such a strong backbone.
Planetary dignities in Thulām
| Graha | Dignity / role | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn (சனி) | Exalted · full yogakāraka | 4th & 5th lord (kendra+trine) AND uccha — the sign's great strength |
| Venus (சுக்கிரன்) | Rules + Mūlatrikoṇa | Lagna lord & 8th lord; own sign, but the 8th blemish is subdued |
| Mercury (புதன்) | Friend · half yogakāraka | 9th & 12th lord (owns the 9th trine) — a benefic here |
| Sun (சூரியன்) | Debilitation — நீசம் | 11th lord & bādhakādhipati; nīca, so its harm is reduced |
| Rahu · Ketu | Act as friends | Functionally friendly — shrewd and effective for the Libra native |
| Moon · Mars | Neutral / mixed | Moon (10th) net-neutral but strong in lagna; Mars (2&7) māraka, harsh |
| Jupiter (குரு) | Enemy | 3rd & 6th lord — turns self-interested and arrogant here |
Teaching note
Backbone table. Headline: Saturn exalted + owning the 4th (kendra) & 5th (trine) = a full yogakāraka. Sun is debilitated (11th lord + bādhaka) — its harm reduced. Venus rules & holds mūlatrikoṇa. Mercury the half-yogakāraka. This is the mirror-image of Aries in a sense: here Saturn shines, the Sun falls.

| 4 | Capricorn | Saturn |
| 5 | Aquarius | Saturn |
| 6 | Pisces | Jupiter |

| 10 | Cancer | Moon |
| 11 | Leo | Sun |
| 12 | Virgo | Mercury |
Full yogakāraka — Saturn
Owns the 4th (kendra) & 5th (trine) AND is exalted here — the single strongest planet for a Libra chart.
Half yogakāraka — Mercury
Owns the 9th (bhāgya trine) & 12th — strongly benefic for the native.
Bādhaka — 11th
Movable signs take the 11th as bādhaka; the Sun is bādhakādhipati (and debilitated here).
Māraka — 2nd & 7th
Both owned by Mars, so Mars is the mārakādhipati — the standard assignment, no departure.
Teaching note
Internalise the lordships. Saturn owns the 4th & 5th (kendra+trine) = full yogakāraka; Mercury owns the 9th = half yogakāraka. Unlike some earlier signs, the māraka here (Mars, 2nd & 7th) and bādhaka (Sun, 11th) are the standard textbook assignments — flag that consistency.
What Thulām governs (kārakatva)
Commerce (the Vaiśya)
Grain-trade, ornament-making & goldsmithing, the gem trade; commission-agency, land-trade, cattle-trade, oil trade; perfumes & fragrant goods; contracting
Law, learning & counsel
Courts, judges, advocates, administration, jurisprudence; purāṇa & expounders; Veda, philosophy, yoga, logic, dharma-śāstra, jyotiṣa; meditation
Craft & refinement
Silk; household-goods manufacture; civil engineering, architecture, interior decoration; fine liquor; the fine and decorative arts
Body & health
The lower abdomen & large intestine — indigestion, gastric/peptic ulcer, wind (vāyu), hernia, appendicitis
Teaching note
The through-line is Venus in an airy sign of exchange and balance: trade, law, counsel, refinement and the arts — the merchant, the judge, the connoisseur. The health cluster is the digestive lower abdomen. All recur in the planet sections.
Places ruled by Thulām
Within Bhārat
Surat · Agra · Baroda · the Krishna district of Andhra · the northern Penna-river region · Kalahasti · Sri Sailam · Hyderabad · shop-streets & mixed city quarters
Around the world
Argentina · Japan · Burma · Tibet · Portugal · markets, courts & trading districts
Teaching note
Used in mundane and relocation work. The thread is commercial and urban — market-streets, trading towns, mixed crowds — fitting the merchant-and-exchange sign. Continues the foreign-naming thread (Jūkam).
Classical view · two authorities
Phaladīpikā
Suffers loss & fatigue, looking diminished; few children; loves divine deeds; devoted to brahmins & great souls; wanders abroad; good-natured; two wives; tall; a trader; capable, courageous, compassionate; speaks weighing all in the balance.
Satyāchārya
Uneven limbs; contrary nature; afflicted by kapha & vāta; restless mind; short; forgets good done; earns much & spends well; great fame; devoted to elders; protects those who trust him; walks in good ways; loves dharma; patriotic.
Teaching note
Read as period portraits. Phaladīpikā catches the even-handed, wandering, trade-and-dharma nature; Satyāchārya the restless, fame-earning, generous, protective and patriotic one. Both note the strong marital/relationship thread ('two wives') characteristic of this Venus sign.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
Born in Libra — Saturn's exaltation sign — has more than one wife; good sons; does not keep his family customs properly; wealthy; dear to kings of fine mattresses; fond of fragrant things; attached to relatives; of a helpful mind.
danger
smallpox
enemies
weapon
black magic
Teaching note
Note 'Saturn's exaltation sign' named right in the verse — the author's whole reading pivots on it. The age-dangers and the precise death-timing are illustrative classical material; present them as such.
From experience · the balance-holder
The scales that weigh at once
Like a balance, they weigh anyone's worth in an instant and act knowing their measure — quick, shrewd judges of people.
Slow to reveal, firm once set
Won't blurt an opinion; decide after deep thought and rarely change. Of pure speech — slow to give their word, but keep it however they can.
Honest, but not to be cheated
Mostly honest and principled; never drop a task once taken. But if someone tries to cheat them, they cheat back rather than be cheated.
Loyal to the trusting
Never abandon those who trust them — trust is their foundation, and betrayal they detest. Great faith in God; help only the deserving.
Teaching note
The author's central image: the scales. They weigh people instantly, decide slowly, keep their word, and repay a cheat with a cheat. Loyalty to the trusting and faith in God are the moral core. 'They must have everything go right for them.'
From experience · home, comfort, speech
Family, comfort, refinement
Great affection for parents, wife and children — especially daughters. Love a pompous, comfortable life in fine houses, neat dress, chains, rings and perfumes.
Ruled by the wife
Of strong desire; the wife, understanding this, wins them over — and the household finances pass to her hand, which saves them from blind spending.
Good talkers, fine orators
If angered, pour out their vexation and won't stop talking; turned to politics they make excellent platform-orators.
Not idlers
Cannot sit still — always keep some plan going; desire ties with other women, but only to a degree the wife wouldn't know. Baldness often appears.
Teaching note
The other half: the family-and-comfort lover, the wife-run household (which steadies their spending), the gifted talker/orator, and the restless planner. Handle the desire material maturely as the text's framing. Being a male sign, the author's voice is male-default throughout.
The Nine Planets
in Thulām
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Libra native
Śukra · Sūrya · Candra · Kuja · Guru · Budha · Śani · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Into the practical core. Remind students: Venus (lord) rules & holds mūlatrikoṇa; Saturn is exalted and the full yoga-giver; Mercury a good half-yogakāraka; the Sun is debilitated (harm reduced); Jupiter & Mars trouble the sign; Rahu/Ketu behave shrewdly. Planet order starts with the lord, Venus.
Venus (Śukra)
Lord · mūlatrikoṇa · own sign
- Ruler and mūlatrikoṇa-holder in its own lagna gives skill and cleverness; also owns the 8th, but as the lagna is the 6th from the 8th, that trouble is subdued.
- As lord of worldly pleasures in the lagna, it bestows pleasures generously — and forms ties with other women, kept well hidden.
- Love pomp and a comfortable life; neat clothes, small chains and rings, perfumes and ornaments; decorate the wife and enjoy.
- Strong earners; some hold much ancestral property — Venus alone in Libra sets their life in good order.
Teaching note
The lord in its own sign with mūlatrikoṇa — a strong, refined, pleasure-and-comfort placement. Note the 8th-lordship blemish cancelled by the '6th-from-8th' logic. A woman, by the author's frame, is beautiful and refined. Present the desire material descriptively.
Sun (Sūrya)
Debilitated · 11th lord · bādhaka
- As 11th (lābha) lord but debilitated, the Sun loses strength — so its harmful side is reduced.
- The 11th being the house of gains & knowledge, they get knowledge naturally, with earning ability; brisk, holding responsible administrative posts.
- The 11th signifies foreign travel → travel abroad is likely; but being an enemy of the lagna, it gives a quick temper, a rough streak and haste.
- They slip in the matter of women, spend on them, and — lacking thrift though they earn — money-problems persist.
Teaching note
The Sun is debilitated here (and bādhakādhipati), so paradoxically its harm is muted while its 11th-house gains and knowledge come through. The temper and the lack of thrift are the caveats. This is the mirror of Aries, where the Sun is exalted.
Moon (Candra)
Neutral · 10th lord
- The 10th-lord placed in the lagna is a strong arrangement; whether waxing or waning, it gives an elevated professional standing (waxing especially fine).
- Some become trade-chiefs, big businessmen, or 'many-trade kings'; firm-minded and task-completing, every thought aimed at the profession.
- Great attachment to the mother, and love for the wife; not much drawn to outside affairs, though they'll use a chance that comes.
- Avoid public entanglements, waste no time, never head anything needlessly. A waning Moon: a little agitated and unsatisfied — but still hard-working.
Teaching note
The Moon owns the 10th (karma) for Libra, so Moon-in-lagna is a strong career signature — the sign's professional engine. Waxing is better; waning brings some restlessness. A genuinely good single placement.
Mars (Kuja)
Māraka · 2nd & 7th lord
- Not a special state; very emotional and easily irritated — grumbling over small matters, forever fault-finding and self-critical.
- Demand of others 'is this right?'; everything must go correctly for them; they cannot bear anything crooked and call it out on the spot.
- Speak out impulsively and hurt many, yet don't worry about it afterward.
- Mostly honest, energetic and quick — but hasty and rash. Mars is the māraka lord here (2nd & 7th).
Teaching note
Mars is the māraka lord (2nd & 7th) and neutral-to-harsh here — the restless, fault-finding, justice-demanding placement that unsettles Libra's balance. Judge any Libra-Mars for its haste and sharp tongue.
Jupiter (Guru)
Enemy · 3rd & 6th lord
- A peculiar state: they act like big men, with extraordinary courage and fear of no one, and good subject-knowledge used to their own advantage.
- Always self-interested — even public service is done with a profit-eye ('a merchant won't go even to the river without profit').
- Sitting in one place they get things done through others, finishing expenses with others' money; borrow on credit and pile it into property in others' names, repaying poorly.
- Mostly a political background or big-men's favour; with outward show, draw women into their net and profit from them — skilled cheats whom many diseases don't touch.
Teaching note
For Libra, Jupiter owns the 3rd & 6th — a functional malefic. The reading is the self-interested, profit-eyed 'big man,' not the benevolent sage — another reminder that functional nature depends on the lagna, not the planet's reputation.
Mercury (Budha)
Friend · half yogakāraka · 9th & 12th
- Being the 9th lord (bhāgyādhipati), Mercury alone in Libra is truly a great fortune — wealthy, influential, keen and caring in public service.
- Help others generously; charitable and dharma-minded, magnanimous, good and unhesitating spenders; devoted to relatives, parents and elders.
- Fond of divine works, pilgrimages and holy bathing; good tolerant administrators to whom fame comes of its own.
- Good knowledge of the arts — Veda, vedānta, philosophy, yoga, jyotiṣa, mathematics; recognise cheats instantly and try to reform them; make no enemies; modest even though desire exists.
Teaching note
Mercury owns the 9th (bhāgya trine) & 12th — the half-yogakāraka — so Mercury-in-lagna is one of the best single placements: fortunate, generous, learned, honourable. The author even philosophises here about 'first tasting evil to know the rareness of good.'
Saturn (Śani)
Exalted · full yogakāraka · 4th & 5th
- Saturn here cannot be underrated — the planet fearsome elsewhere is not fearsome to Libra; here it is the FULL yogakāraka, exalted, shining in their life.
- It gives wealth, influence, status and fame, keeping them higher than any text describes: fine large houses, servants, vehicles and land, with fame seeking them out.
- Of an unhurried, deeply-considered, well-planned disposition; big men who deliver justice like a nation's rule, sought for high positions and fulfilling them rightly.
- Interest in divine works and selfless public service; much honour carried humbly; desire present but modest — they do not wander. Strong attachment to family and great souls.
Teaching note
The crown of the sign: Saturn exalted AND owning the 4th (kendra) & 5th (trine) is a first-rank full yogakāraka. This is the single best Saturn placement in the whole book — the opposite of Saturn in Leo/Cancer. Emphasise that the 'fearsome' planet is the Libra native's greatest ally.
Rāhu (Rāhu)
Skilful, self-interested, a survivor.
- Makes them skilful — clever in profession and trade, knowing the tricks (thillu-mullu) and staying alert, and using them when needed.
- Self-interested; won't back off from anything for gain; some engage in anti-government trades, hoarding or black-market sales.
- Money-earning is the aim, reached by any road; bold for anything, using even low or bad people to advantage.
- With a political connection they go down every crooked path and form ties with low-class women — generally survivors who live any way at all.
Teaching note
Rahu is friendly-functioning here — shrewd, adaptable, effective — but with a strong pull toward crooked, money-at-any-cost routes. Present the descriptive material as the text's framing.
Ketu (Ketu)
Stronger than Rahu — knowing, fearless, occult-edged.
- A stronger state than Rāhu: immense knowledge and courage, fearing and worrying over nothing, wholly self-interested — money prime, reached any way.
- Know jyotiṣa and the occult arts (spirits, pilli, sūniyam, ēval), and use them when needed.
- Keep ties from big men down to low rogues; take due revenge on enemies; show themselves prominent everywhere.
- Political influence and public-service interest — all with a profit-eye; do many pujas at home, some taking up a deity-worship. Called 'an unfathomable puzzle.'
Teaching note
Ketu here is the knowing, fearless, self-serving type with an occult edge — competent and prominent, but self-interested. Rounds out a node-pair that behaves shrewdly but crookedly for Libra.
Conjunctions
in Thulām
The Sun joined with each planet — and the multi-planet combines
Watch the Sun+Saturn case: does the exalted Saturn overcome the debilitated Sun?
Teaching note
The author frames the two-planet combos around the Sun; then the multi-planet combines. The key case to preview: Sun+Saturn — whether the exalted full-yogakāraka Saturn overcomes the debilitated Sun depends on whether Saturn sits in the 8th.
Sun + Moon · Sun + Mars
Sun + Moon
A somewhat strong arrangement. The debilitated 11th-lord Sun with the 10th-lord Moon gains by neechabhaṅga (not a full rāja yoga) a good professional position, good earning strength and skill. The 10th & 11th lords together in the lagna-kendra is strong — income from more than one profession, a comfortable respected life, some in temple or monastery service. Overall good for Libra.
Sun + Mars
Cannot be called special — roughness, quick anger, carelessness; no money-satisfaction, expenses biting the hand (though the wife's control of finances saves them, and bad company may form). As two fiery planets, with Mars owning the reproductive Scorpio, it excites desire beyond control; diseases can come through wanton contact; being big spenders, shortage remains.
Teaching note
Sun+Moon = the 10th & 11th lords together in the lagna, a strong career-and-gains combine helped by neechabhaṅga. Sun+Mars = the harsh, desire-driven one that unsettles the sign. Handle the desire material as the text's framing.
Sun + Mercury · Sun + Jupiter
Sun + Mercury (Budha-Āditya)
Not to be set aside — earning strength somehow present. A self-made dharma-man of compassion, charity and magnanimity, doing what he can for those who seek him; very honour-conscious (keeping his word even by borrowing), no miserliness, spending freely — especially for divine works, great souls and pilgrimages. Naturally good in philosophy, vedānta, yoga, jyotiṣa & the arts; devoted; desire present but not wandering; prone to pitta & vāta. Generally good people.
Sun + Jupiter
Sitting in one place, they achieve through others, with a good imposing bearing that attracts people; detailed knowledge used skilfully at the right time, gaining fame. But self-interested and miserly, spending no money of their own; borrow on credit and amass property, unworried about repaying. Good intelligence and public-service interest; many diseases don't touch them; very bad in women-matters but so skilfully hidden that people say 'would he? never!'
Teaching note
Sun+Mercury (Budha-Āditya) is the bright one — the self-made dharma-man, learned and generous. Sun+Jupiter, Jupiter being a functional malefic here, reads as the miserly, profit-eyed, secretly-scandalous 'big man.' A good contrast within the Sun-conjunctions.
Sun + Venus · Sun + Saturn
Sun + Venus
Not special. The bādhakādhipati Sun joins the lagna-lord Venus and is debilitated; by neechabhaṅga they act disorderly — half-finishing tasks, acting without depth. Even with earning skill they don't use it well; always thinking of women, unsatisfied by any number of unions ('more and more'), spending randomly for women's comfort with little care for family — wishing for a pompous, easy life that never comes.
Sun + Saturn — study it closely
A 'both-difficult' state. The debilitated Sun tries to overpower the exalted, strong Saturn — but Saturn, by its exaltation-strength, is NOT overcome except when in the 8th. If Saturn is strong (not in the 8th), the full-yoga Saturn overcomes the Sun's obstruction and gives good (a little less than Saturn alone, but not bad). If Saturn is in the 8th, the Sun's harmful nature prevails. Study this combine deeply before deciding.
Teaching note
The key case of the chapter: Sun+Saturn. The exalted, full-yogakāraka Saturn OVERCOMES the debilitated Sun — UNLESS Saturn is in the 8th, where the Sun's harm wins. A perfect teaching example of why placement (which house) decides the outcome. Sun+Venus is the disorderly, desire-driven one.
Sun + Rāhu · Sun + Ketu
Sun + Rāhu
Not special — bad deeds, ties with low people, no magnanimity, all self-interest, cheating; they know every fraud and cannot tell good from bad (all one to them), hold money supreme, have no control in women-matters and wander at random; tasks left unfinished; bold for every crooked path, cheating and revenging on enemies any way, with an interest in black-magic (māntrīkam).
Sun + Ketu
Behaves as Sun + Rāhu — the author groups the two nodes together for the conjunctions. The nodal conjunction with the Sun corrupts it: unfathomable, money-at-any-cost, crooked and untrustworthy.
Teaching note
The nodal conjunctions with the Sun corrupt it — money-at-any-cost, crooked, untrustworthy. The author explicitly groups Ketu with Rahu here. The cautionary end of the Sun-conjunction spectrum. Present descriptively.
The multi-planet combines
Moon + Mercury + Venus — very special: a comfortable life, beautiful company, trade-and-profession craft, earning strength and a love of pomp. The 10th-lord, 9th-lord and lagna-lord together.
The favourable combines
Sun+Moon+Mercury (elevation, fame); Sun+Mercury+Venus (good, ever-coming income); Moon+Mercury+Saturn (big profession-chiefs); Mercury+Venus+Saturn & Moon+Venus+Saturn keep things good.
The elevating but self-interested
Sun+Moon+Jupiter → big-man status but profit-seeking; Sun+Moon+Saturn → elevates the profession though thoughts run at random; Mercury+Venus+Jupiter → profit-mongers, self & family only.
The mixed / conflicted
Moon+Mars+Mercury acts well but random spending on women; Moon+Mars+Venus seeks 'more'; Mars+Moon/Mercury+Saturn stand always on a footing of conflict, with no harmony with the wife.
The crooked & masquerading
Sun+Mars/Saturn/Venus + Rahu/Ketu → crooked ways & fraud; Sun+Mercury/Jupiter + Rahu/Ketu → masqueraders living double lives; Saturn+Mercury/Venus + Rahu/Ketu → good & bad mixed.
Teaching note
The crown combine: Moon+Mercury+Venus (10th + 9th + lagna lords) stacks the sign's best significations. Then the tiers down through the elevating-but-self-interested, the conflicted (no harmony with the wife), and the crooked/masquerading nodal combines. Note the recurring 'wife' theme.
Putting it together
"For the scales, the fearsome Saturn is not fearsome at all — exalted and yogakāraka, it is the very planet that raises the Libra native high."
Libra in one line: Venus's airy, even-handed sign of the scales — refined, partnership-minded, weighing all things, with an exceptionally strong Saturn.
Watch the Sun's debilitation (harm reduced), and for Sun+Saturn ask which house Saturn sits in. Confirm with the whole chart.
Teaching note
Close the arc. The Libra lesson: the yogakāraka Saturn is exalted here, so the sign's foundation is exceptionally sound — even as the Sun (its 11th lord) is debilitated. Reiterate: single-factor readings are indicative; confirm with strength, aspects, vargas, daśā — and, for Sun+Saturn, always check the house.
Key takeaways
Thulām = cardinal, airy, Venus-ruled — even-handed, refined, partnership-minded, weighing all at a glance.
SATURN is exalted here and owns the 4th & 5th — a full yogakāraka, the sign's greatest strength.
The Sun is debilitated (11th lord + bādhaka) — its harm reduced; Venus rules & holds mūlatrikoṇa.
Mercury (9th & 12th) is the half-yogakāraka; the Moon (10th) gives a strong career from the lagna.
Māraka (Mars, 2 & 7) and bādhaka (Sun, 11) are the standard textbook assignments here.
For Sun+Saturn, the exalted Saturn wins UNLESS it sits in the 8th — always check the house, and the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap — have students say each back. The two to remember: Saturn exalted + yogakāraka (the fearsome planet turned the sign's best friend), and the Sun+Saturn rule that the exalted Saturn prevails unless it's in the 8th.
