விருச்சிகம்Viruccigam — Scorpio
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Chapter 8: the Viruccigam (Scorpio) Ascendant — Mars's fixed water sign, "the scorpion." A lagna beset by functional enemies — the Moon debilitated, and even the lagna-lord Mars a functional enemy — but rescued by TWO saviours: the Sun (10th) and Jupiter (2nd & 5th, a dhana-yoga giver). Rāhu & Ketu are (disputedly) exalted here. Same study method; confirm against the whole chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, dignities (Moon debilitated, the two saviours), significations, places
House map & doṣas
Lordships for a Scorpio chart, the trials, and the māraka/bādhaka picture
The native's portrait
Three classical texts + the author's 'scorpion's sting' reading
Nine planets
Mars, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — each alone
Conjunctions
The Sun with each graha, and the multi-planet combines
Synthesis
The Moon+Mars+Jupiter 'wondrous combine', and reading the scorpion
Teaching note
Same six-movement arc. Preview the sign's tension: a difficult lagna (Moon debilitated, Mars its own functional enemy) saved by the Sun and Jupiter, and crowned by the Moon+Mars+Jupiter combine. Planet order starts with the lord, Mars.
Viruccigam at a glance
Symbol
தேள் — the Scorpion. It stings, and strikes from hiding.
Element / class
Water-natured (jala) · a fierce, malefic (pāpa/krūra) sign · ātma-jñāna · prolific
Modality
Sthira (ஸ்திர · fixed) · female sign
Order & body
8th sign of the zodiac · signifies the reproductive/generative organs
Ruler / dignities
Mars (செவ்வாய்) rules; Rāhu & Ketu (disputedly) exalted; the Moon debilitated
Direction / colour
North (வடக்கு) · ash / pale-golden · marks the twilight hour · śiras-udaya
Teaching note
Anchor the image: the scorpion, water, Mars, the generative organs. Fixed + water + Mars predicts an intense, secretive, penetrating, skilled and self-guarded nature. The headline dignity fact — the Moon (the mind) DEBILITATED here — sets up the sign's inner tension.
Planetary dignities in Viruccigam
| Graha | Dignity / role | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (சூரியன்) | Friend · yogakāraka | 10th lord (karma) — a fiery, skilful saviour of the sign |
| Jupiter (குரு) | Friend · yogakāraka | 2nd & 5th lord (dhana + trikoṇa) — a dhana-yoga giver, the great boon |
| Moon (சந்திரன்) | Debilitation · bādhaka | 9th lord & bādhaka, but nīca — the mind fallen; needs neechabhaṅga |
| Mars (செவ்வாய்) | Lord — but an enemy | Rules the 1st but also owns the 6th → a functional enemy of its own lagna |
| Venus (சுக்கிரன்) | Neutral (samam) | 7th & 12th lord — pleasure-and-loss, dissatisfaction in marriage |
| Mercury (புதன்) | Enemy · māraka | 8th & 11th lord — unsteady, a functional malefic and māraka |
| Saturn (சனி) | Enemy | 3rd & 4th lord — brings delay and restlessness; loses even its own good |
| Rāhu · Ketu | Enemies · (exalted?) | Functional lagna-enemies, though said to be exalted here (disputed) |
Teaching note
Backbone table. The unusual picture: the Moon is debilitated AND the bādhaka; the lagna-lord Mars is itself a functional enemy (it owns the 6th too); Mercury, Saturn and the nodes are malefics. The saviours are the Sun (10th) and Jupiter (2nd & 5th). Flag that the nodes' exaltation here is disputed.
The Scorpio house map & its doṣas
| House | Rāśi | Lord |

| 2 | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| 3 | Capricorn | Saturn |
| 4 | Aquarius | Saturn |
| 5 | Pisces | Jupiter |
| 6 | Aries | Mars |
| 7 | Taurus | Venus |
| 8 | Gemini | Mercury |
| 9 | Cancer | Moon |
| 10 | Leo | Sun |
| 11 | Virgo | Mercury |
| 12 | Libra | Venus |
The two saviours
Sun (10th, karma) & Jupiter (2nd+5th, dhana + trikoṇa — a dhana-yoga giver) are the yogakārakas that carry the sign.
Why the trials come
Mars owns the 6th (disease/enemies); the Moon (9th) is debilitated & bādhaka; Saturn (3&4) is an enemy; Venus (7&12) unsettles the marriage.
Bādhaka — 9th
Fixed signs take the 9th as bādhaka; the Moon is bādhakādhipati — harmful when waning or in 3/6/8/12.
Māraka — 3rd & 8th
The author names Saturn & Mercury (3 & 8). Standard texts use the 2nd & 7th (Jupiter & Venus).
Teaching note
Internalise the lordships and the sign's built-in trials: Mars owns the 6th, the Moon (9th) is fallen and the bādhaka, Saturn (3&4) is an enemy, Venus (7&12) unsettles marriage — all offset by the Sun (10th) and Jupiter (2&5). Flag the author's non-standard māraka (3 & 8) vs the textbook 2 & 7.
What Viruccigam governs (kārakatva)
Depths & the hidden
Mines; the occult & mantra/tantra work; chemicals; the reproductive organs; secret loans; hidden, penetrating and transformative matters
Force & the sharp
War & war-machinery; steel furniture; poison-creatures & venomous bites; hunting; surgery and its instruments; trade-unions
Earth-moving & making
Compressors, tractors, earth-movers, land-levellers; foundries & casting; copper wire; cement, ceramics, machine-tools; contracting
Body & health
The reproductive organs — organ diseases, the womb, menstrual disorders; strong desire in both sexes; a small, ever-hungry 'wolf's belly'
Teaching note
The through-line is Mars in the fixed water 8th sign: the deep, the hidden, the sharp and the transformative — mining, the occult, surgery, weapons, heavy machinery. The health cluster is the reproductive system. All recur in the planet sections.
Places ruled by Viruccigam
Within Bhārat
Western Orissa · the Sone & Mahānadi river-banks · Ahmedabad · the Thane part of Bombay · Konkan · north Sri Lanka · slum quarters · crevice- & burrow-rich country
Around the world
Washington · Liverpool · San Francisco · the Transvaal · industry-rich, mining regions
Teaching note
Used in mundane and relocation work. The thread is subterranean and industrial — mines, works, crevice-country, slum quarters — fitting the deep, hidden, force-and-transformation sign. Continues the foreign-naming thread (Thaurpi).
Classical view · two authorities
Phaladīpikā
Rounded calves & a broad chest; diseased; loses his father early; does cruel deeds; has the favour of the royal line; and has hands & feet marked by the lotus-line (padma-rēkhā).
Satyāchārya
Broad-built; orderly face & belly; cruel conduct; a pitta-heavy, yellowish body & eyes; slow to act yet walks fast; heads his town; a big family; a tormentor & big spender; not dear to the wife; enemies even in his own clan.
Teaching note
Read as period portraits. Both catch the intense, cruel-edged, disease-prone, town-leading, big-family, big-spending nature — and the strain in the marriage ('not dear to the wife') and with kin ('enemies in his own clan'). The lotus-line and royal favour mark distinction amid difficulty.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
The harsh-natured scorpion. Born in Scorpio — very fond of mother & father; ever-loving to the wife; speaks happy words; completes without fail whatever he begins.
neck ailment
illness
fever/injury
12–13
fear
fever / magic
Teaching note
Jātaka Alaṅkāram opens 'the harsh-natured scorpion' yet grants real virtues — devotion to parents, love for the wife, follow-through. Treat the age-dangers and death-timing as illustrative classical material.
From experience · the scorpion
The scorpion's sting
He speaks cuttingly of anyone; self-important; when angry, leaps without looking and pours out reckless, unbearable words — a master of sarcastic, hurtful speech.
Strikes from hiding
He cannot face an enemy directly; he retreats and takes revenge later — like the scorpion that hides at the lit lamp and stings when it is put out.
Worth three at a task
Courage a little short, yet he talks as if he'll do all himself — until a problem comes face to face, when he draws back. Pokes into needless matters.
Skilled, but self-undone
Many are gifted experts — mechanics who cure faults, inventors of new things — but haste, carelessness, quick anger and fierceness undo their chances.
Teaching note
The author's central image: the scorpion's sting. Cutting, self-important speech; revenge from hiding rather than open confrontation; genuine expert skill undercut by temper and carelessness. The 'strikes from hiding' image is the heart of it.
From experience · desire, skill, creed
Desire runs high
Being the generative sign, the thought of desire is ever present; fond of coarse words; it is 'doubtful whether he is a faithful husband to even ten in a hundred.'
Both-bad, yet trusted
Cannot be crossed 'like a snake' nor trodden 'as rotten'; stays in a both-bad state — not to be trusted, yet arranging that one must trust him.
The expert's hands
Highly skilled workers of fine administrative sense — they do the intricate work others cannot, and cure faults others cannot find.
Live, don't suffer
Earners who spend lavishly and change their minds constantly; their creed: 'life is to be lived well, not suffered — enjoy it as far as it goes.'
Teaching note
The other half: the high desire, the 'both-bad but trusted' paradox, the genuine expert skill, and the 'live, don't suffer' creed. Handle the desire material maturely as the text's blunt period framing. Being a female sign, the author includes strong descriptions throughout.
The Nine Planets
in Viruccigam
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Scorpio native
Kuja · Sūrya · Candra · Budha · Guru · Śukra · Śani · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Into the practical core. Remind students: Mars (lord) is itself a functional enemy; the Sun (10th) and Jupiter (2nd & 5th) are the saviours; the Moon (9th) is debilitated; Mercury, Saturn and the nodes trouble the sign. Planet order starts with the lord, Mars.
Mars (Kuja)
Lord — but a functional enemy
- The lagna lord, but owning the 6th too, so a functional enemy: impatient, hasty, stubborn, quick-angered, speaking with a cunning mask.
- They poke into needless matters and stir up confusion, earning a bad name — 'without aim, not to any purpose'; they cannot sit idle.
- Fond of heroic deeds, sport, fights and disputes, unafraid, saying whatever is in mind — making many enemies; won't change their stand for anyone.
- As a fiery planet in a watery, generative sign, desire runs high in both sexes; satisfaction is hard, so they seek many partners — inviting disease — and, spending beyond means, fall into debt.
Teaching note
Mars is both the lagna lord AND the 6th lord, so even the ruler is a functional enemy — the harsh, restless, quarrel-prone core of the sign. Note the fiery-planet-in-water-sign desire reading. Not a special single placement.
Sun (Sūrya)
Friend · 10th lord · yogakāraka
- The 10th (karma) lord in the lagna is a boon: brisk, quick, task-completing skilled experts, scholars and shrewd businessmen, good administrators.
- Some win government posts, even high ones; they wish to know everything, details at their fingertips.
- Earners who spend lavishly and enjoy life, yet care about saving and acquiring property; high desire, but they do not wander for women.
- They form government ties, dislike crooked routes to fame, are mostly fair-minded, respect others' views but decide for themselves, and always want to be at the forefront.
Teaching note
One of the two saviours: the Sun owns the 10th, so Sun-in-lagna is a strong career signature — the fiery, skilful, administrative engine of the sign. A genuinely good single placement.
Moon (Candra)
Debilitated · 9th lord · bādhaka
- The bhāgya-lord Moon, also the bādhaka, is debilitated with no strength in Scorpio — 'not to be called special.'
- As the mind-significator it makes them mind-unsteady, agitated, unable to make quick firm decisions — so time passes and chances are missed.
- Attachment to mother and father is reduced, but attraction to women heightened; as a watery planet in a water sign, the body runs cold and kapha-heavy.
- High potency and skill in the art of love, ever needing a woman's nearness; from the unsteady mind come careless earning, constant worry, and a refusal of advice.
Teaching note
The chapter's key weakness: the Moon (the manas-kāraka) is debilitated AND the bādhaka. Its only redemption is a waxing Moon with neechabhaṅga. This fallen Moon is why 'mental agitation runs high' for the sign.
Mercury (Budha)
Enemy · 8th & 11th lord · māraka
- As the 8th & 11th lord — an unsteady planet, often retrograde or combust near the Sun — Mercury is not good in Scorpio.
- In the lagna with dik-bala it fully overpowers them: no firm state, speech and thought changing back and forth; not to be trusted, and those who trust are dropped.
- They talk tall ('bend the sky like a bow'); fraud and cheating come naturally; money is prime, earned any way.
- Very bad in women-matters; skilled in the art of love, expert at charming and profiting from women; their creed: 'life is to be lived well, not suffered.'
Teaching note
Mercury is a functional malefic here (8th & 11th, and a māraka), unsteady and often combust near the Sun — the fraud-prone, untrustworthy, tall-talking placement. Present the descriptive material as the text's framing.
Jupiter (Guru)
Friend · 2nd & 5th lord · yogakāraka
- Owning the 2nd (dhana) & 5th (trikoṇa), a dhana-yoga giver: they look big, and to protect honour will spend even by borrowing.
- Jupiter keeps them always in a big-man's station ('must be on top'), and aspecting the 5th gives fame and honour of its own.
- But as the dhana-lord placed 12th from its own house, finances do not run smoothly — shortage comes just when need is high.
- They take up public service and high position but won't misuse them — honour and dharma are in their blood — yet, considering borrowing a dishonour, Jupiter makes them a debtor, running their work through others.
Teaching note
The other saviour: Jupiter owns the 2nd & 5th (dhana + trikoṇa), a strong benefic. The reading is the honourable, generous 'big man' — but with a money-flow problem (dhana-lord placed awkwardly) that turns them into debtors. A largely good placement with a caveat.
Venus (Śukra)
Neutral · 7th & 12th lord
- A fair, moderate state: a pompous, comfortable life becomes a habit they cannot come down from — tasty food, decorative and showy articles a must.
- The wives they get are also pomp-loving spenders who dominate the home; understanding the native's weakness, the wife wins them and makes them her instrument.
- Even so, they are ready to leap to the 'next branch,' keeping other-women ties hidden and spending lavishly; their showy appearance draws women around them.
- As lord of pleasures (and 7th & 12th) in the lagna they must fully enjoy — with real earning strength too: good businessmen, trade-chiefs, commission-agents and farm-owners.
Teaching note
Venus (7th & 12th, neutral) gives the comfort-loving, wife-dominated, pleasure-and-earning reading. The 12th-lordship pulls toward loss and other-women ties. Handle the desire material as the text's framing.
Saturn (Śani)
Enemy · 3rd & 4th lord
- The harsh Saturn, an enemy to Scorpio, first breeds carelessness and laziness — plunging in without forethought, starting and dropping things midway.
- They begin with speed and slow to a crawl, building castles of 'I'll do this' without ever stepping in; as an enemy it gains no strength even in its own houses.
- As the 4th lord, comfort (sukha) is only imaginary — everything comes through intense struggle; good thoughts don't arise, and what they fear tends to happen.
- From low self-confidence they despair quickly and miss chances; and cannot be firm in women-matters — a single glance and they fall, careless of looks.
Teaching note
Saturn is a functional enemy here (3rd & 4th) and one of the weakest placements — carelessness, unfinished castles, imaginary comfort, chronic self-doubt. The opposite of Saturn's exalted glory in Libra.
Rāhu (Rāhu)
Enemy · (exalted?)
- A strange state: haste, anger, and getting caught in problems' snares; a hasty, stubborn, quick-angered intellect.
- With the scorpion for symbol, Rāhu gives a crooked, venomous, malicious mind — mocking anyone, tormenting the wife (stinging through speech and delighting in it).
- Ready for fights and quarrels; earning is not by honest ways — every crooked path taken without hesitation, 'somehow money must come.'
- They respect no one, live by 'seeing is believing,' keep ties with low-class women and handle women roughly, knowing nothing of gentleness.
Teaching note
Rāhu (a functional enemy, though said to be exalted here — disputed) intensifies the scorpion's sting into a crooked, venomous mind. Present the harsh material as the text's severe framing of a difficult placement.
Ketu (Ketu)
Enemy · (exalted?)
- Worse than Rāhu: of a spiteful mind, they take terrible revenge and never forget those who harm them, reversing cruelly and without mercy.
- Skilled in mantra, māntrīka and tāntrik works, they take revenge through them; some act as fake sādhus or keep their company.
- Self-interested masqueraders, expert at winning trust and then 'cutting the throat,' reading others' weaknesses and checkmating them.
- Very bad in the matter of women — the source's framing here is extreme and indiscriminate; from excess desire the union is rough, yet still unsatisfying.
Teaching note
The harshest single placement in the chapter. Present strictly as the source's severe, moralised characterisation of a difficult, occult-tinged placement — indicative, chart-dependent, never a verdict on a person. Because Scorpio is the 8th (occult) sign, texts pile intensity onto the nodes here.
Conjunctions
in Viruccigam
The Sun joined with each planet — and a rare four-planet combine
Moon + Mars + Jupiter (+Sun) → Gaja-Kesari · Chandra-Maṅgala → rāja yoga
Teaching note
The author frames the two-planet combos around the Sun; then the multi-planet combines. Preview the crown jewel: Moon+Mars+Jupiter, which forms Gaja-Kesari, Chandra-Maṅgala and Guru-Maṅgala together — and with the Sun added, a rāja yoga.
Sun + Moon · Sun + Mars
Sun + Moon
Not bad to call it: good earning strength and a rising profession, though with frequent mental agitation and un-firm action — yet they try again and win. Family-attached, not miserly, spending as need requires; energetic but of unsound health, so often fatigued; and, even being cautious, they slip into women's net here.
Sun + Mars
Gives extraordinary briskness and high skill-in-action — but haste, anger and fury are their enemies: everything must be done fast, and if it can't be finished right they turn furious, missing chances. They overreach, take needless loans, and by cutting speech make hidden enemies. High pitta; the desire-and-disease pattern repeats.
Teaching note
Sun+Moon = earning and career with mental agitation, but they win through. Sun+Mars = extraordinary drive spoiled by haste and fury, with overreach and hidden enemies. Both carry the sign's desire-and-health caveat.
Sun + Mercury · Sun + Jupiter
Sun + Mercury (Budha-Āditya)
Makes them very skilled and capable — everything planned, no rest till the task is done, seeing the profession's finest subtleties and grasping anyone quickly. Being earners, good spenders; fond of the arts and of women, whom their appearance draws — though they keep no permanent ties. Problems keep coming, but they overcome them.
Sun + Jupiter
Gives good — makes them truly big men: fame, influence, professional and earning strength, political ties, public service and divine works, with no self-interest. They spend their own money freely, help all, love great souls and holy places, guard their honour, keep private matters hidden, and do not wander for women though attracted.
Teaching note
Sun+Mercury (Budha-Āditya) is the very-skilled, problem-overcoming one. Sun+Jupiter is the finest of the Sun-conjunctions — two saviours together making a genuine, honourable big man with no self-interest. A strong contrast to the difficult combines to come.
Sun + Venus · Sun + Saturn
Sun + Venus
Cannot be faulted: professional and trade skill, good earning strength, and a pompous, comfortable life with nothing lacking — a decorated home, buying whatever keeps the wife beautiful, 'turning night into heaven.' Yet even amid comfort they feel it is not enough and, wondering whether more pleasure lies elsewhere, exceed the wife's control and taste other women.
Sun + Saturn
Cannot be called good — always a conflict in the mind, unable to reach a quick decision, so time passes and chances are lost. The son Saturn spoils the Sun's elevations; the father-relation is poor; excess thinking, hesitation, laziness and mental fatigue attack; they cannot behave truly toward the wife and find no satisfaction. 'Their own mind is their enemy.'
Teaching note
Sun+Venus is the comfortable-but-never-enough, desire-driven one. Sun+Saturn (father-son enemies) is the mind-conflicted, opportunity-losing, joyless one — 'their own mind is their enemy.' Present the desire material as the text's framing.
Sun + Rāhu · Sun + Ketu
Sun + Rāhu (or Ketu)
Not special. Both spoil the Sun's good, ruining a lasting, high professional name; honesty is abandoned, and to earn money any means is taken — mostly by crooked ways: speculation, gambling, races and betting, smuggling, intoxicant-goods, cheating and fraud, black-marketing, running prostitution — and possibly mantra/tāntrik work.
The author's summary
'Generally these two nodes with the Sun make the Scorpio native act badly.' Because Rāhu and Ketu are (said to be) exalted in Scorpio and it is a 'mobile/agitated' sign, the nodes can rule the native entirely, as they please.
Teaching note
The nodal conjunctions with the Sun corrupt it — money-at-any-cost by every crooked route. The author notes that, the nodes being (disputedly) exalted here in a 'mobile' sign, they can dominate the Scorpio native entirely. The cautionary end of the Sun-conjunction spectrum. Present descriptively.
The multi-planet combines
Moon + Mars + Jupiter — a wondrous combine: Gaja-Kesari, Guru-Maṅgala and Chandra-Maṅgala yogas form together, keeping them very high. Add the Sun → a rāja yoga, and big political position surely comes.
The strong combines
Sun+Moon+Jupiter gives firmness (vairāgya) and success; Moon+Mars gives Neechabhaṅga Rāja Yoga (the fallen Moon redeemed); Moon+Jupiter and Mars+Jupiter give good deeds and honour.
The steady middle
Sun+Moon+Mercury, Sun+Moon+Venus, Moon+Guru+Venus, Sun+Mercury+Guru/Saturn — 'not to be called spoiling': mostly good, comforts and earning intact, social standing created.
The mixed / conflicted
Moon+Mercury/Venus → unsteady, wife dominates; Moon+Mercury+Venus → craving all pleasures; Mars+Mercury/Venus, Mars+Saturn/nodes → no help, 'they do not know the good way.'
The worst combines
Mercury+Jupiter → always in confusion; Venus+Jupiter → masqueraders ('good as fake sādhus'); any combine with Rahu/Ketu → crooked ways and fraud, worst of all.
Teaching note
The crown jewel first: Moon+Mars+Jupiter forms Gaja-Kesari + Chandra-Mangala + Guru-Mangala together, and with the Sun a rāja yoga — the sign's great redemption. Note also Moon+Mars = Neechabhanga Raja Yoga (the fallen Moon lifted). Then the tiers down to the nodal-fraud combines.
Putting it together
"A lagna hemmed in by its own enemies — even the Moon fallen and Mars turned foe — yet carried through by the Sun and Jupiter. In truth, Scorpio natives are capable people."
Scorpio in one line: Mars's intense, secretive fixed-water sign of the scorpion — deeply skilled and penetrating, self-guarded, with the mind fallen and the will fierce.
Lean on the saviours (Sun, Jupiter); watch the Moon's phase for neechabhaṅga; look for the Moon+Mars+Jupiter yoga. Confirm with the whole chart.
Teaching note
Close the arc. The Scorpio lesson: a lagna full of functional enemies (fallen Moon, Mars-as-foe, Saturn, nodes) redeemed by the Sun (10th) and Jupiter (2nd & 5th), and crowned by the Moon+Mars+Jupiter combine. Reiterate: single factors are indicative; confirm with strength, aspects, vargas, daśā — and always check the Moon's phase for neechabhaṅga.
Key takeaways
Viruccigam = fixed, watery, Mars-ruled — intense, secretive, penetrating, skilled, quick to sting.
The Moon (mind, 9th lord) is DEBILITATED here and the bādhaka — the sign's inner tension.
Even the lagna-lord Mars is a functional enemy (it owns the 6th); Saturn & the nodes are malefics.
The two saviours are the Sun (10th, karma) and Jupiter (2nd & 5th, a dhana-yoga giver).
The crown combine: Moon+Mars+Jupiter = Gaja-Kesari + Chandra-Maṅgala (+Sun → rāja yoga).
Watch the Moon's phase (neechabhaṅga), lean on Sun & Jupiter, and confirm with the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap — have students say each back. The two to remember: the fallen Moon and enemy-lord Mars (why the sign struggles), and the Sun+Jupiter saviours plus the Moon+Mars+Jupiter combine (why it can still rise high).
