கும்பம்Kumbham — Aquarius
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Chapter 11: the Kumbham (Aquarius) Ascendant — Saturn's fixed-air sign of the water-bearer (Māsi Magam / Kumbha Melā). Like Sagittarius, no planet is exalted or debilitated here, so it gives even results. Venus is the full yogakāraka — yet also the bādhaka; the deep skill often stays 'a lamp under a pot.' Same study method; confirm against the whole chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, the 'no exaltation/fall' glory, dignities (Venus full yoga), significations, places
House map & doṣas
Lordships for an Aquarius chart, plus the māraka and bādhaka picture
The native's portrait
Three classical texts + the author's 'lamp under a pot' reading
Nine planets
Saturn, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Rahu, Ketu — each alone
Conjunctions
The Sun with each graha, and the multi-planet combines
Synthesis
Venus's double role, the Mercury+Venus combine, and reading the water-bearer
Teaching note
Same six-movement arc. Preview the two headline facts: like Sagittarius, no planet is exalted or debilitated here (even results); and Venus, the full yogakāraka, is ALSO the bādhaka — a striking double role. Planet order starts with the lord, Saturn.
Kumbham at a glance
Symbol
கும்பம் — the water-bearer's pot. 'Like the full pot that does not splash.'
Element / class
Air-natured (vāyu) · a fierce, malefic (krūra) sign · a dharma & śāstra sign · biped
Modality
Sthira (ஸ்திர · fixed) · ōja (odd) · male sign
Order & body
11th sign of the zodiac · signifies the ankles & lower legs
Ruler / dignities
Saturn (சனி) rules & holds mūlatrikoṇa; NO planet exalts or falls here
Direction / colour
West (மேற்கு) · brown/ash · strong by day · Māsi Magam / Kumbha Melā
Teaching note
Anchor the image: the water-bearer's pot, air, Saturn, the ankles. Fixed + air + Saturn predicts a reserved, thoughtful, humane, imaginative and self-guarded nature. The headline: like Sagittarius, no planet is exalted or debilitated here, so results are even.
Planetary dignities in Kumbham
| Graha | Dignity / role | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Venus (சுக்கிரன்) | Friend · full yogakāraka · bādhaka | 4th & 9th lord (kendra + trine) — best planet, yet also the bādhaka |
| Mercury (புதன்) | Friend · half yogakāraka | 5th & 8th lord (owns the 5th trine) — sharp, upright, benefic |
| Rahu · Ketu | Friends | Saturn's friends (author corrects the 'enemy' error) — shrewd, occult-savvy |
| Saturn (சனி) | Lord · mūlatrikoṇa | Lagna lord & 12th lord — slow, deep, doubting; no fuss |
| Moon (சந்திரன்) | Neutral · 6th lord | Unsteady mind, disputatious; many enemies |
| Mars (செவ்வாய்) | Neutral · malefic | 3rd & 10th lord — professional strength, but harsh & stubborn |
| Jupiter · Sun | Malefic / enemy | Jupiter (2nd & 11th) = lagna-pāpa; Sun (7th) = the enemy |
Teaching note
Backbone table. Headline: Venus is the full yogakāraka (4th kendra + 9th trine) AND the bādhakādhipati (9th) AND carries kendrādhipati-doṣa — opposed roles in one planet. Mercury is the upright half yogakāraka. Note the author's correction: Rahu & Ketu are FRIENDS here (Saturn's friends), not enemies.
The Aquarius house map & its doṣas
| House | Rāśi | Lord |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aquarius | Saturn |
| 2 | Pisces | Jupiter |
| 3 | Aries | Mars |
| 4 | Taurus | Venus |
| 5 | Gemini | Mercury |
| 6 | Cancer | Moon |
| 7 | Leo | Sun |
| 8 | Virgo | Mercury |
| 9 | Libra | Venus |
| 10 | Scorpio | Mars |
| 11 | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| 12 | Capricorn | Saturn |
Full yogakāraka — Venus
Owns the 4th (kendra) & 9th (trine) — the best planet — but ALSO the bādhaka (9th) with kendrādhipati-doṣa.
Half yogakāraka — Mercury
Owns the 5th (trine) & 8th — sharp, upright, benefic; the most reliable placement.
Bādhaka — 9th
Fixed signs take the 9th as bādhaka; Venus is the bādhakādhipati (and the yogakāraka!).
Māraka — 2nd & 7th
Jupiter (2nd) & Sun (7th) — the standard textbook assignment, no departure.
Teaching note
Internalise the lordships. Venus owns the 4th & 9th (kendra + trine) = full yogakāraka — but the 9th is also the bādhaka, so Venus is BOTH. Mercury owns the 5th = half yogakāraka. This chapter is textbook-correct on doṣas: māraka = 2nd & 7th (Jupiter & Sun), bādhaka = 9th (Venus).
What Kumbham governs (kārakatva)
Labour & waste
Cleaning & scavenging; waste-water places & factories; the washerman's trade; load-carrying carts (bullock, rickshaw, horse)
Iron, fire & craft
Ironwork & blacksmithing; lime-kilns & brick-kilns; vessel- and tin-making; potter & clay-doll work; glass-sand, coal, firewood
The hard trades
Hunting, butchery, leather-tanning; jail warden & executioner; cremation-ground watching; extortion & spying; timber & orchard work
Body & health
The ankles & lower legs — joint pains & rheumatism, wind, liver/gallstone, nerve-weakness, epilepsy
Teaching note
The through-line is Saturn in a fixed-air sign of labour and the low trades — waste, iron, fire, the hard occupations. The health cluster is the ankles/lower legs and the nervous system. All recur in the planet sections.
Places ruled by Kumbham
Dwellings
Places where waste water collects · pits & garbage-dumps · factories & works — the low-lying and the industrial
Theme
(The book's place-list for Kumbham is brief) — waste-water and factory ground; low-lying, industrial quarters
Teaching note
Used in mundane and relocation work. The thread is low-lying, waste-water and industrial ground — pits, dumps, factories — fitting the labour-and-waste sign. Continues the foreign-naming thread (Haruthrōgam).
Classical view · two authorities
Phaladīpikā
Does bad deeds in secret; a pot-like body; clever at harming others; skilled in his livelihood; of little wealth; miserly; begs from others; of few children; fond of fragrant flowers.
Satyāchārya
Proud & of cruel nature; of good family; full of pitta & wind; works with many workers and loses; of many faults; achieves through relatives yet opposes them; a quarrelsome-yet-good wife; chest diseases with phlegm.
Teaching note
Read as period portraits — notably unsparing (Aquarius is Saturn's malefic sign). Both catch the secretive, miserly-yet-clever, relative-dependent, quarrelsome nature. The 'does bad in secret' and 'clever at harming' lines echo the author's reserved-but-watchful portrait.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
Born in Aquarius — praises himself and mocks & belittles others; speaks blame; somewhat cunning; knows everything; an ever-pitta-heavy body; quickly forgets others' kindness; red eyes; an enjoyer of pleasure and a friend of women.
fever
epilepsy / wind-fever
Teaching note
Jātaka Alaṅkāram catches the self-praising, all-knowing, pleasure-loving, quick-to-forget-kindness nature. The age-dangers (fever at 11, epilepsy at 19) and death-timing are illustrative classical material.
From experience · the water-bearer
Reserved, yet self-praising
Of reserve and modesty — yet they praise themselves and belittle others; swayed by praise, especially a woman's, doing whatever a flattering woman asks.
The lamp under the pot
Their achievement is very little; however much skill they have, they cannot display it and win fame — 'a lamp placed under a pot,' its light hidden by hesitation and fear.
Great doubters
If angered they shout blindly, then regret it; they trust no one — not even themselves — suspecting whatever they see, with no order in anything they do.
Castles in the air
Because things rarely turn out as expected, they live in imagination — 'if only I were first, I would do all this' — building castles in the air.
Teaching note
The author's central image: the lamp under a pot — real skill, hidden by hesitation and fear. Reserved yet self-praising, swayed by (women's) praise, doubting everyone including themselves, and living in imagination. The 'hidden light' is the heart of the Aquarius portrait here.
From experience · limits, home, longing
Seethes, but won't confront
On seeing injustice they seethe within, lacking courage to act, withdrawing with 'what is it to me?' — and later boasting how they would have handled it.
The confined pot
Kumbham is a narrow pot, so their rise stays within a boundary; of many thousands of charts, only a very few gain real advancement — most are arranged 'barely so-so.'
Bed on the mind
Since Saturn (the 12th bed-lord) is also the lagna lord, thoughts of the bed run high; the wife (7th = Sun) rarely suits, so secret ties with other women form.
Even benefics can harm
'Even benefics and yogas tend to give harm here' — the author's frank note on why the sign's promise so often falls short.
Teaching note
The other half: the seethe-but-won't-confront streak, the 'confined pot' whose rise stays bounded, the bed-on-the-mind marriage, and the frank 'even benefics harm here' note. Handle the desire material maturely as the text's blunt framing. Being a male sign, the author's voice is male-default.
The Nine Planets
in Kumbham
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Aquarius native
Śani · Sūrya · Candra · Kuja · Budha · Guru · Śukra · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Into the practical core. Remind students: Mercury (half yogakāraka) is the most reliable; Venus (full yogakāraka but also bādhaka) disappoints; Mars gives professional strength but harshly; the Sun & Jupiter are difficult. Planet order starts with the lord, Saturn.
Saturn (Śani)
Lord · mūlatrikoṇa · 1st & 12th
- Excess deliberation, slowness and laziness dominate — postponing even small things, with no mind-firmness or quick action.
- Of an unsteady mind, they speak back-and-forth and change decisions without reason; great doubters who trust neither others nor themselves.
- As the 12th (bed) lord they sleep well anywhere; desire runs high — more drawn to dark-complexioned women than fair ones.
- However well the wife behaves, they build no good name for her, always grumbling some fault; prone to nerve-weakness, wind, kapha and pain-diseases.
Teaching note
The lord in its own sign gives the pure Aquarius signature: slow, deep, unsteady, doubting, no order in anything. A self-guarded but scattered placement — the water-bearer's reserve without the discipline to focus it.
Sun (Sūrya)
Enemy · 7th lord (māraka)
- Not special. Always irritable and hasty — contrary to Kumbham's calm — quick-tempered and stubborn.
- Even where the wife's hand is dominant they will not fully submit; frequent clashes at home.
- They hand the household to the wife and withdraw, yet without laziness — meddling in public affairs and stubbornly opposing needless things.
- Of a pitta-wind, dry constitution, with quick-release and unsatisfying union — seeking other women too, with no control.
Teaching note
The Sun is the sign's enemy (7th māraka), so Sun-in-lagna disturbs Aquarius's calm with irritability, stubbornness and clashes. Note the contrast with the exalted Sun of Aries.
Moon (Candra)
Neutral · 6th lord
- Not special. Of an unsteady mind with no firmness, back-and-forth speech, changing thoughts and denying what they said.
- No high thoughts, but crooked intellect and disputatious speech (vitaṇḍāvāda), agreeing to nothing readily.
- Their speech and deeds make many enemies, and they face constant trouble from them; they spend at random.
- Especially slippery in women-matters; high desire brings kapha, wind and lung/blood-related disorders — and, debt piled on debt, they become debtors.
Teaching note
The Moon owns the 6th (enemies/disease) for Aquarius, so Moon-in-lagna reads as the unsteady, disputatious, enemy-making placement. The 6th-lordship pulls toward conflict and debt.
Mars (Kuja)
Neutral · 3rd & 10th (malefic)
- Gives professional strength and task-success. But quick anger, stubbornness, carelessness and blurting speech.
- They insist their view is right and argue, accepting no advice; even knowing they are wrong, will not change — doing it and regretting it.
- Earning strength is present, but random spending brings trouble; they quarrel with the wife always, never overlooking her small faults.
- Forcing union at night by authority, and from unsatisfying union seeking other women — bringing sex-diseases home; prone to pitta and blood-pressure ailments.
Teaching note
Mars owns the 3rd & 10th (a functional malefic, but the karma-lord) — so Mars-in-lagna gives real professional drive, spent harshly through anger, stubbornness and marital conflict. Judge it for the drive and the temper together.
Mercury (Budha)
Friend · half yogakāraka · 5th & 8th
- The state works well: with skill and shrewdness they are somewhat distinguished, planning well and succeeding, with good longevity (past 80).
- Interest in divine works and mahān-darshan; attachment to children, wife, relatives and parents; good earning and a magnanimous, dharma-minded nature.
- Helping, but knowing the deserving vessel; cautious and hard to deceive; not openly tying with any woman — choosing after testing.
- Keeping outside ties hidden from the wife, who trusts them fully; they relish and enjoy the wife, yet are 'bees to flowers' — enjoyers of life.
Teaching note
Mercury owns the 5th (trikoṇa) & 8th — the half yogakāraka — so Mercury-in-lagna is the sign's most reliable single placement: sharp, upright, long-lived, family-bonding. The best of the Aquarius planets.
Jupiter (Guru)
Neutral · malefic · 2nd & 11th
- A functional malefic here (2nd māraka & 11th lord) — [in the lagna] it makes them procrastinate, using any excuse to postpone and do nothing.
- Vain (empty) honour and vedānta-talk run high; they spend beyond their means for prestige and turn into debtors.
- Fame-lovers swayed by praise, promising beyond their capacity and suffering for it, boasting of ties with big shots.
- No real professional advancement — 'the cart rolls without grease,' struggling along behind an outward show.
Teaching note
For Aquarius, Jupiter owns the 2nd (māraka) & 11th — a functional malefic — so the great benefic reads as procrastination, vain honour and debt here. Another reminder that functional nature depends on the lagna, not the planet's reputation.
Venus (Śukra)
Friend · full yogakāraka · but bādhaka
- Cannot be called a great special — one would expect the lagna's benefic and yogakāraka to give high rise, but it disappoints.
- The asura-guru Venus drags them a different way — into a pompous, comfort-loving life, slaves to luxury.
- They raise a big family and hand responsibilities to the wife, caught in a struggle between labour and comfort — earning to satisfy her love and buy her everything.
- Drawn to other women's smiles; ornaments, fine clothes and vehicles all become 'necessities' — 'what is there to sacrifice? nothing is possible — that is Venus's state.'
Teaching note
THE teaching case of the chapter: Venus is the full yogakāraka (4th + 9th) BUT ALSO the bādhaka (9th) with kendrādhipati-doṣa — opposed roles in one planet — so the yoga-giver 'disappoints,' pulling toward luxury rather than rise. Judge it by strength and placement, never the label alone.
Rāhu (Rāhu)
Imaginative, detached, 'work is worship'.
- A 'both-mixed' state — yet Rāhu, though a malefic, does not much spoil Kumbha-Rāhu.
- It gives an imaginative life with some action and earning, but — like a sannyāsi without much grip on life — makes them do everything as a mere duty.
- It gives faith in God, then dismisses it as māntrīkam, reducing temple-pujas and devotion.
- It makes them think 'livelihood itself is worship' — even seeking to live without honest labour.
Teaching note
Rāhu is friendly here (the author's correction: the nodes are Saturn's friends, not enemies). The reading is the imaginative, detached, 'work-is-worship' type — effective but ungrounded. Present the material as the text's framing.
Ketu (Ketu)
The cunning leader — worship as trade.
- Makes them leaders — but turns worship, puja and mantra into a profession (mantrik, cheating, fraud work).
- It reduces honest earning and inclines them to crooked ways.
- It gives an immense, cunning intellect; if they mean to bring someone down, they will not show the right way nor help.
- They do every crooked thing with expert skill, and keep others always trusting them.
Teaching note
Ketu is friendly by dignity, but reads as the cunning, occult-trading leader — competent but self-serving. Present the fraud/occult material strictly as the source's severe framing. Rounds out a node-pair the author insists is friendly to Aquarius.
Conjunctions
in Kumbham
The Sun joined with each planet — and the multi-planet combines
Sun + Mercury → distinction · Mercury + Venus → the two yoga-givers (but not complete)
Teaching note
The author frames the two-planet combos around the Sun; then the multi-planet combines. Preview the good ones: Sun+Mercury gives distinction, and Mercury+Venus joins the two yoga-givers — though the sign 'won't let it be complete.'
Sun + Moon · Sun + Mars
Sun + Moon
Not special — the two enemies of Kumbham joined, so they suffer: mind and body unsound, ever feeling burdened, life a weight; labouring hard yet unable, the 6th-lord Moon 'leasing out every disease to the body wholesale.' From bodily disorder they are always irritable, and everything feels hateful — 'why should others live well while only I suffer?'
Sun + Mars
Somewhat favourable — giving professional and earning rise. But ever quick-angered, stubborn and careless, blurting speech that loses chances and makes enemies; thinking themselves superior and saying so; high pitta; tying freely with other women though a little afraid of the wife — doing things fast and skilfully, yet others take the credit by flattering them.
Teaching note
Sun+Moon = the two enemies joined, a burdened, disease-prone, resentful state. Sun+Mars = the one favourable Sun-combine, giving professional rise — but harshly, and others take the credit. Handle the desire material as the text's framing.
Sun + Mercury · Sun + Jupiter
Sun + Mercury
Gives Kumbham distinction — good skill, cleverness and shrewdness, with professional and earning rise, and knowledge or love of an art; the wife wins them by her intellect and covers even their straying, but they do not wander; devout and dharma-minded, helping the distressed — life fairly well-arranged, all in the wife's hands.
Sun + Jupiter
Gives only vain (empty) honour, with constant shortage; the wife runs the household with grand notions of pomp and spends at random, and — lacking courage to check her — they spend along. Fame-lovers swayed by praise, posing as detached vedāntis and great jñānis, with no real advancement — 'the cart rolling without grease.'
Teaching note
Sun+Mercury is the bright one — the sign's distinction, learned and well-arranged. Sun+Jupiter (Jupiter a functional malefic here) is the vain-honour, shortage-ridden, posturing one. A clean contrast within the Sun-conjunctions.
Sun + Venus · Sun + Saturn
Sun + Venus
Outside they are bold, but before the wife 'a snake in a box' — fully ruled at home; pompous and full of vain fuss, and expert at deceiving the wife, playing the perfect husband while eyeing other women; never satisfied by any number of unions, spending freely for women; self-interested, doing anything for a comfortable life, with no goal or principle.
Sun + Saturn
The two enemies joined spoil married life — husband and wife unsuited, the father-son bond bitter; the unsatisfying marriage drives them to random women, some setting up a second home; no satisfaction even in union; diseases (pitta, nerve-weakness) attack more; earning poor, the profession neglected — a life without any achievement.
Teaching note
Sun+Venus = 'a snake in a box' before the wife, deceptive and principle-less. Sun+Saturn (the two enemies) spoils marriage and leaves a life without achievement. Present the desire material as the text's framing.
Sun + Rāhu · Sun + Ketu
Sun + Rāhu (or Ketu)
Gives Kumbham no distinction — crooked intellect, cunning speech, contrary action, ties with low people, crooked earning, irresponsible acts and random spending, beatings and quarrels, always with a profit-eye.
The author's summary
'Public good is nowhere in their dictionary,' and they act very badly through women, with no magnanimity at all. The cautionary end of the Sun-conjunction spectrum.
Teaching note
The nodal conjunctions with the Sun corrupt it — crooked, profit-eyed, no public good. The cautionary close of the Sun-conjunctions. Present descriptively.
The multi-planet combines
Mercury + Venus — the two yoga-givers joined "give a perfect state" — but the sign will not let it be complete, adding small obstacles (Mercury the 8th lord, Venus the bādhaka).
The favourable combines
Mercury+Jupiter (honour, big men in dharma); Mercury+Saturn (comforts, deliberate devotees); Mars+Jupiter (rise, honour, fighting injustice); Sun+Candra+Budha & Budha+Guru+Sevvāy create good states.
The steady middle
Sun+Moon+Mars, Sun+Moon+Jupiter, Budha+Candra+Sukkiran — favourable to a degree; Moon+Mercury does some good (waxing better).
The mixed / conflicted
Mars+Venus (dandy, wandering); Mars+Mercury (obstacles); Moon+Jupiter (vain honour, debt); Moon+Venus (pomp & women); Mercury+Rāhu/Ketu (occult leanings).
The difficult combines
Mars+Saturn ('a battlefield-mind'); Mars+Rāhu/Ketu (crooked, kidnapping, brothels); Moon+Saturn & Moon+nodes (low company, no firmness); Jupiter+Saturn/nodes not good.
Teaching note
The best combine — Mercury+Venus (the two yoga-givers) — is deliberately left 'not complete' by the sign (Mercury's 8th-lordship, Venus's bādhaka role), which captures the whole chapter's theme: the promise that falls just short. Then the good Mercury/Mars-Jupiter families down through the conflicted and difficult combines. The author's closing note: for Kumbham, every combine must be studied carefully.
Putting it together
"The water-bearer carries deep waters — but the lamp sits under the pot. Lift it, with Mercury's integrity and Venus's yoga, and the hidden light finally shows."
Aquarius in one line: Saturn's cool, reserved, humane fixed-air sign of the water-bearer — thoughtful and imaginative, its deep light often hidden.
Lean on Mercury (the reliable half-yoga); weigh Venus's double role by strength; watch the enemy Sun and malefic Jupiter. Confirm with the whole chart.
Teaching note
Close the arc. The Aquarius lesson: a reserved, thoughtful Saturn sign of even results, whose most reliable planet is Mercury and whose great teaching case is Venus's double role (full yogakāraka AND bādhaka). Reiterate: single factors are indicative; confirm with strength, aspects, vargas, daśā.
Key takeaways
Kumbham = fixed, airy, Saturn-ruled — reserved, humane, imaginative; the sign of the water-bearer.
Like Sagittarius, NO planet is exalted or debilitated here — it gives even, consistent results.
Venus (4th & 9th) is the full yogakāraka — but ALSO the bādhaka: opposed roles in one planet.
Mercury (5th & 8th) is the half yogakāraka — the sign's most reliable planet.
The author corrects the pañcāṅgas: Rāhu & Ketu are FRIENDS here (Saturn's friends), not enemies.
The theme is the 'lamp under a pot' — deep skill often kept hidden; confirm with the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap — have students say each back. The two to remember: Venus's double role (full yogakāraka AND bādhaka — judge by strength), and the 'lamp under a pot' theme (deep skill, hidden). Also the Rāhu/Ketu-friendship correction.
End of Chapter 11
Kumbham · Aquarius
Next — the final sign: Mīnam (Pisces) — dual, ruled by Jupiter, where Venus is exalted and the two fishes close the zodiac.
