மகரம்Magaram — Capricorn
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Chapter 10: the Magaram (Capricorn) Ascendant — Saturn's cardinal-earth "holy sign," where the Sun's uttarāyaṇa (Pongal / Makara Sankranti) begins. Mars is exalted here, Jupiter debilitated, and Venus is the full yogakāraka. A sign all about depth — the thriftiest and most self-guarded of the twelve. Same study method; confirm against the whole chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, the 'holy sign', dignities (Mars exalted, Jupiter fallen), significations, places
House map & doṣas
Lordships for a Capricorn chart, plus the māraka and bādhaka picture
The native's portrait
Three classical texts + the author's 'all about depth' reading
Nine planets
Saturn, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Rahu, Ketu — each alone
Conjunctions
The Sun with each graha, and the multi-planet combines
Synthesis
The Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga, the exalted-Mars paradox, and reading the depths
Teaching note
Same six-movement arc. Preview the sign's two headline facts: Mars is exalted here (but as bādhaka-lord, turns to force) and Venus is the full yogakāraka. Note it's the 'holy sign' of uttarāyaṇa. Planet order starts with the lord, Saturn.
Magaram at a glance
Symbol
மகரம் — the makara (crocodile / goat-fish). Strong in its own depths.
Element / class
Earth-natured (bhūmi) · a fierce, malefic (krūra) sign · a holy (punita) sign · four-footed
Modality
Chara (சர · movable/cardinal) · female sign
Order & body
10th sign of the zodiac · signifies the thighs & knees (rheumatism)
Ruler / dignities
Saturn (சனி) rules; Mars exalted; Jupiter debilitated; Venus full yogakāraka
Direction / colour
South (தெற்கு) · black · strong by night · marks the uttarāyaṇa (Pongal)
Teaching note
Anchor the image: the makara, earth, Saturn, the thighs/knees. Cardinal + earth + Saturn predicts a deep, ambitious, patient, self-guarded and thrifty nature. The headline facts — the 'holy sign' of uttarāyaṇa, with Mars exalted and Jupiter fallen.
Planetary dignities in Magaram
| Graha | Dignity / role | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Venus (சுக்கிரன்) | Friend · full yogakāraka | 5th & 10th lord (trine + kendra) — the sign's finest planet |
| Mercury (புதன்) | Friend · half yogakāraka | 6th & 9th lord (owns the 9th trine) — sharp, benefic, integrity |
| Mars (செவ்வாய்) | Friend · exalted (bādhaka) | Exalted here, but owns the 11th (bādhaka) — great power, harsh use |
| Rahu · Ketu | Friends | Friendly; 'Makara-Rāhu learned the Atharvaṇa Veda' — good subject-knowledge |
| Moon (சந்திரன்) | Neutral · māraka | 7th lord — the wife rules the home; waxing better |
| Jupiter (குரு) | Neutral · debilitated | Debilitated here (3rd & 12th) — laziness, indecision, low drive |
| Sun (சூரியன்) | Enemy · 8th lord | The lone enemy; but as āyus-lord in the lagna, gives longevity |
Teaching note
Backbone table. Headline pair: Mars exalted (great strength — but bādhaka lord, so harsh), and Venus the full yogakāraka (5th trine + 10th kendra). Mercury is the half yogakāraka. Jupiter is debilitated; the Sun is the lone enemy (but lengthens life as āyus-lord). Rahu is the special 'learned the Atharvaṇa Veda' node.

Full yogakāraka — Venus
Owns the 5th (trikoṇa) & 10th (kendra) — the single finest planet for a Capricorn chart.
Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga
The 9th lord (Mercury) with the 10th lord (Venus) — the Mercury+Venus rāja-yoga combine.
Bādhaka — 11th
Movable signs take the 11th as bādhaka; Mars is bādhakādhipati — even though exalted.
Māraka — 2nd & 7th
Saturn (2nd) & Moon (7th) — the standard textbook assignment, no departure.
Teaching note
Internalise the lordships. Venus owns the 5th & 10th (trine + kendra) = full yogakāraka; Mercury owns the 9th = half. Their conjunction (9th + 10th lords) = Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga. This chapter is textbook-correct on doṣas: māraka = 2nd & 7th (Saturn & Moon), bādhaka = 11th (Mars).
What Magaram governs (kārakatva)
The depths & minerals
Mining, coal, natural gas, oil-wells; iron, lead, tin, copper; gems & cut diamonds dug from the earth; glass-sand
Sea & coast
Deep-sea and sea-creature work; coastal work; salt-pans; river-banks and marshlands
Craft & labour
Blacksmithing & ironwork; construction; glass-factory & leather-tanning work; foul-smelling chemicals; broker & agency work
Body & health
The thighs & knees — knee-joint rheumatism (mūṭṭu-vātam), thigh pains, nerve-weakness
Teaching note
The through-line is Saturn in a cardinal earth sign: the deep, the mineral, the laborious and the coastal — mining, ironwork, the sea, hard craft. The health cluster is the thighs and knees (rheumatism). All recur in the planet sections.
Places ruled by Magaram
Within Bhārat
The Ganga–Yamuna banks of Uttar Pradesh · Delhi · Darjeeling · east Bengal · river-banks, marshlands & deep-sea tracts
Around the world
The Pacific Ocean · east Nepal · Siberia · Albania · Brazil · Bulgaria · the Congo-river region of Africa
Teaching note
Used in mundane and relocation work. The thread is deep, low-lying, watery and mineral ground — rivers, marsh, ocean, mines — fitting the earth-and-depths sign. Continues the foreign-naming thread (Ākēkaram).
Classical view · two authorities
Phaladīpikā
Weak below the waist; lazy; desirous of joining low-class women; a hypocrite who plays at dharma but does not do it; fortunate; wanders abroad; and shameless.
Satyāchārya
Small nose, long face & limbs; wind troubles; an animal-like face; timid & of unstable thoughts; a declined family & no great income; keeps fasts; takes a wife below his standing yet quarrels much; weak thighs; many diseases.
Teaching note
Read as period portraits — both are notably unsparing (Capricorn is Saturn's malefic earth sign). Both catch the lazy-yet-fortunate, wandering, fasting, wife-quarrelling, weak-below-the-waist nature. The 'hypocrite who plays at dharma' line echoes the author's 'demure cat' portrait.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
Born in Capricorn — a body-mark in a hidden place; two big eyes; loves fragrant flowers; of un-firm intellect & effort; ever-soft speech; a healthy pleasant body; delights his wife; kills birds in anger.
fever
foreign travel
snake-fear
Teaching note
Jātaka Alaṅkāram grants a pleasant body and a delighted wife alongside un-firm intellect and a hidden body-mark. The age-dangers (fever at 10, foreign travel at 32, snake-fear at 37) and death-timing are illustrative classical material.
From experience · the depths
All about depth
Capricorn is about depth — very hard to know their mind; intensely pressured, deep people who deflect anything with talk or a jest, outwardly one way and inwardly another, remaining a puzzle.
Escapes, never confronts
Even caught in a problem they slip out ('no mud sticks to the fallen moustache'); they never face anyone head-on, watching from a distance, and hesitate to take responsibility.
Strong only in their depths
As a crocodile is strong only in water, they are strong only within their own limits; they boast within their walls, but outside get exposed.
The demure cat
They carry themselves as upright — 'would this cat drink milk?' — yet trust no one; cautious after being burnt, hiding earnings, spending and other-women ties alike.
Teaching note
The author's central image: depth. Unknowable, deflecting, escaping rather than confronting, strong only within their own domain, and demure-but-untrusting. The 'crocodile strong only in water' and 'demure cat' images are the heart of the Capricorn character.
From experience · thrift, patience, home
The thriftiest of the twelve
In money they are very tight-fisted, moved only by flattery; of all twelve Ascendants, Capricorn-born are the most thrifty; borrowing is very hard for them.
Patient, and never forgetting
Not sociable with neighbours, careful even with words; they never forget a wrong, waiting patiently to repay it — and they do repay.
Timid, but harsh if roused
Timid by nature, shrinking from disputes, court and witness — but if roused, they act harshly to prove otherwise.
A little afraid of the wife
They keep other-women ties hidden from the wife (Jupiter, the 12th bed-lord); she, knowing their weakness is desire, learns the bedroom-arts to get what she needs.
Teaching note
The other half: the thriftiest sign of the zodiac, the patient never-forgetting nature (with its patient revenge), the timid-but-harsh streak, and the wife-guarded home. Handle the desire material maturely as the text's blunt framing. Being a female sign, the author's voice is male-default throughout.
The Nine Planets
in Magaram
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Capricorn native
Śani · Sūrya · Candra · Kuja · Budha · Guru · Śukra · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Into the practical core. Remind students: Venus (full yogakāraka) is the finest; Mercury (half) is close behind; Mars is exalted but harsh (bādhaka); Jupiter is fallen; the Sun is the lone enemy (but lengthens life). Planet order starts with the lord, Saturn.
Saturn (Śani)
Lord · 1st & 2nd lord
- Gives its own manda (slow, heavy) quality — deliberating before acting, never moving without knowing the depth, staying aloof and watching quietly.
- They hand the household to the wife and withdraw, not checking even extra expense; only in desire are they 'kings,' needing the wife's pleasure daily.
- Hesitant to pay for pleasure, yet keeping secret ties with any woman who will keep it quiet (even the household maids).
- Not brisk earners, but earn somehow — by crooked ways too — mostly as brokers and agents, unashamed of low work; thrifty, counting before they speak, smiling rarely.
Teaching note
The lord in its own sign gives the pure Capricorn signature: slow, deep, withdrawn, thrifty, working through brokerage. A steady but self-guarded placement — the depths of the sign concentrated in its ruler.
Sun (Sūrya)
The lone enemy — but it lengthens life.
- Not special. As the 8th (āyus) lord and an enemy of Saturn — yet, turning north (uttarāyaṇa), it gives good longevity and soul-strength (ātma-bala).
- It gives earning skill but sets them spending on needless things, and traps them in disputes and quarrels — fighting the wife even over bed-pleasure.
- Of a pitta body, desire runs high; they do not hesitate over other-women ties; careless and hasty, poor in the father-relation, willful.
- Prone to jaundice and indigestion — spoiling Capricorn's depth and calm.
Teaching note
The Sun is the sign's lone functional enemy (8th lord) — so Sun-in-lagna disturbs Capricorn's calm with haste, quarrels and willfulness. The one redemption: as the āyus-lord turned north, it lengthens life. Note the contrast with exalted Sun elsewhere.
Moon (Candra)
Neutral · 7th lord (māraka)
- Since the native leaves the household to the wife and withdraws, the wife (the 7th lord) now sits in the lagna — so she rules the house, sovereign of every decision.
- She watches their every move; though she 'throws chili-powder' (scolds), they endure — for they are skilled in the art of love and melt for her.
- 'Aha, only she exists in the world,' they say, finishing the night's union — yet uniting with other women by day (daytime union their preference).
- A waxing Moon is a little difficult; a waning Moon gives no steady thought.
Teaching note
The Moon owns the 7th (kalatra) for Capricorn, so Moon-in-lagna literally puts 'the wife in the lagna' — she dominates the home. A vivid, memorable reading. Present the desire material as the text's framing.
Mars (Kuja)
Friend · exalted · 4th & 11th (bādhaka)
- A very complicated state: owning the 4th and 11th (bādhaka) and gaining exaltation's great power, the commander-planet makes them cruel-minded, harsh and sadistic.
- Sometimes not even afraid to kill; ready for beatings, disputes and riots, and utterly fearless — area-rowdies, goondas and extortionists, or the big men tied to them, with political ties and hired henchmen.
- They know every crooked way and do anti-government things easily — 'murder, robbery, rape, kidnapping — all present.'
- Of very high desire, handling women roughly, gaining disease from excess, tormenting the wife; self-interested even in public life.
Teaching note
THE teaching paradox of the chapter: Mars is exalted here (great strength) but is the bādhaka lord and a malefic in an earth sign — so the power runs to cruelty and criminality, not heroism. Exaltation gives strength, NOT virtue; the house owned and the nature decide the use. Contrast exalted Saturn's glory in Libra.
Mercury (Budha)
Friend · half yogakāraka · 6th & 9th
- Creates special activity: as the half yogakāraka it gives fine intellect, sharp buddhi and knowledge of the ins-and-outs, grasping any subject at a glance — very cautious and shrewd, hard to deceive.
- Thrifty, yet spending generously for divine works, pilgrimages and mahān-darshan.
- Where Capricorn-born generally lack the father's bond, Capricorn-Mercury keeps the father-relation excellent, with real family attachment.
- They value relatives, keep many friends, guide with wisdom and win over even enemies — accountants, writers and businessmen who fulfil any task precisely, trustworthy and of integrity.
Teaching note
Mercury owns the 9th (bhāgya trine) & 6th — the half yogakāraka — so Mercury-in-lagna is one of the best single placements: sharp, upright, family-bonding, trustworthy. The one placement that mends Capricorn's usual weak father-bond.
Jupiter (Guru)
Neutral · debilitated · 3rd & 12th
- Not special. Very lazy, dropping and postponing everything, letting opportunities slip; boasting they can do all, yet from indecision getting confused and unable to act precisely.
- Their initial energy suddenly drops; even in union they achieve little, releasing quickly and, unsatisfied, repeating.
- The wife cannot bear their kāma-hunger, so whatever woman comes, they unite.
- Earning skill is low; they look to others for small tasks, do things slowly, and from low income struggle to manage expenses.
Teaching note
Jupiter falls here (Capricorn is its debilitation sign), so Jupiter-in-lagna reads as laziness, indecision and low drive — the great benefic weakened. In a real chart, always check for neechabhaṅga before applying this literally.
Venus (Śukra)
Friend · full yogakāraka · 5th & 10th
- A very special state! It gives high positions — fame, influence, honour and status, all — creating good professional strength and earning.
- They hand only the household to the wife and watch other matters themselves, wanting a good, comfortable, pompous life.
- Contrary to Capricorn's thrift, they spend generously and enjoy life fully — a pompous house, servants, vehicles, fine clothes, ornaments and art; interest in dance, music and cinema, some in speculation.
- Skilled in the art of love and relishing the wife — though they do not leave other women, keeping such ties well covered.
Teaching note
The crown of the sign: Venus owns the 5th (trikoṇa) & 10th (kendra) — a first-rank full yogakāraka — so Venus-in-lagna gives status, comfort and success, overriding even Capricorn's native thrift. The single finest placement for this Ascendant.
Rāhu (Rāhu)
The Veda-learned node — a shrewd puzzle.
- A good-and-bad mixed state. Because 'Makara-Rāhu sat here and learned the Atharvaṇa Veda,' out of gratitude it gives some good — good subject-knowledge and jñāna.
- Knowing good and bad, they use each by their own intellect, without hesitation, as needed — good to the good, ready to repay the bad.
- Hard to understand, doing nothing openly; skilled at slipping out of any tangle by speech and at changing to suit the moment.
- Knowledgeable in spirits, pilli, sūniyam, ēval and the māntrik/tāntrik arts, doing hidden works — generally a puzzle.
Teaching note
Rāhu is friendly here, with the special 'learned the Atharvaṇa Veda in Capricorn' lore giving it good subject-knowledge. The reading is the shrewd, adaptable, occult-tinged puzzle — effective but unknowable. Present the occult material as the text's framing.
Ketu (Ketu)
Cunning, vengeful, self-guarded.
- Not special — it turns both good and bad to bad. Of a very cunning mind, expert in every crooked way; though they know the straight road, they mostly act crooked.
- Of a high drive to earn fast, taking terrible revenge on enemies; so cautious that none can checkmate them.
- Even an occult attack (mantrik, pilli, sūniyam, spirits) they escape by more powerful works — 'though all this is great toil for them.'
- Some become fake sādhus, using their word-power to fulfil their needs and especially to draw women — masquerading god-men who keep ties with the well-off.
Teaching note
Ketu is friendly by dignity but reads as the cunning, vengeful, self-guarded, occult-savvy type — the shadow side of the node pair. Present the fake-sādhu and occult material strictly as the source's severe framing.
Conjunctions
in Magaram
The Sun joined with each planet — and the multi-planet combines
Mercury + Venus → Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga · Budha+Candra+Sukkiran+Guru → a wondrous state
Teaching note
The author frames the two-planet combos around the Sun; then the multi-planet combines. Preview the highlights: Mercury+Venus (9th + 10th lords) forms the Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga, and the four-planet Budha+Candra+Sukkiran+Guru is the 'wondrous' combine.
Sun + Moon · Sun + Mars
Sun + Moon
Not special. A chance of delayed marriage and ties with several women; high desire without control — 'bees flitting flower to flower'; poor health; no satisfaction in union; careless in the profession, hasty and blurting things out, irresponsible, of poor family and kin bonds — 'living somehow.'
Sun + Mars
Two fiery planets joining in Capricorn — 'like an atom bomb.' Extreme stubbornness and quick anger, opposing everyone, unyielding, ready for beatings, riots, murder, robbery, rape and kidnapping; poking in everywhere and taking the lead; cruel and disrespectful; mostly with political ties, anti-government acts, and links to the police-dept, terrorists and extortionists.
Teaching note
Sun+Moon = uncontrolled, restless, 'living somehow.' Sun+Mars = the harshest — two fiery planets 'like an atom bomb,' running to force and crime. Both handle the desire material as the text's blunt framing.
Sun + Mercury · Sun + Jupiter
Sun + Mercury
Moderate. Though the father-relation should be good, it is spoiled by their laziness and irresponsible speech and deeds, making more enemies; overspending brings debt-troubles. Not much ins-and-outs skill; hasty, of unsteady mind; earning low, yet boasting and mocking much, thinking themselves heroes and belittling others — very slippery in women-matters.
Sun + Jupiter
Not special. No steady thought, changing thoughts and deeds often, meddling in needless matters, standing surety for others and getting trapped; vain boasting leading to half-done work; not experts in earning, overspending into shortage — yet hiding their state and showing off, skilled at outward appearance.
Teaching note
Both middling-to-poor here. Sun+Mercury spoils the father-relation and breeds debt; Sun+Jupiter (with fallen Jupiter) reads as unsteady, surety-trapped and outwardly showy. Note how the Sun's enmity to the lagna drags even benefic combines down.
Sun + Venus · Sun + Saturn
Sun + Venus
Not specially good. Big spenders and pomp-lovers, mostly by borrowing — obtaining even food on loans; wanting a comfortable life and growing troubles; no control in women-matters, getting trapped; profession-problems and struggles; earning with ups and downs, no satisfaction.
Sun + Saturn
Does not create satisfying activity. Slow, inert action and excess deliberation lose them chances; the father-son relation is poor; they do not mix with family, staying aloof; the wives who marry them struggle, forced to shoulder everything; they build castles in the air — yet cling to the wife at night, and if she withholds, jump to the next flower.
Teaching note
Sun+Venus drags even the yogakāraka down into borrowing and pomp. Sun+Saturn (father-son, the enemy on the lord) is the aloof, opportunity-losing, wife-struggling one. Present the desire material as the text's framing.
Sun + Rāhu · Sun + Ketu
Sun + Rāhu (or Ketu)
Whoever joins, the conduct is alike — willful, uncontrolled, money the only aim by any road; crooked ways and anti-social acts; ties with fake sādhus, social-enemy groups, terrorists and smugglers.
The author's image
'The Sun's glory dims in Capricorn — these two snakes (the nodes) do it like an eclipse (grahaṇa).' The cautionary end of the Sun-conjunction spectrum.
Teaching note
The nodal conjunctions with the Sun corrupt it — money-at-any-cost, crooked, anti-social. The author's eclipse image ('the two snakes dim the Sun like a grahaṇa') is the memorable close. Present descriptively.
The multi-planet combines
Budha + Candra + Sukkiran + Guru — creates a wondrous state. And Mercury + Venus (9th + 10th lords) gives the Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga — high positions, honour and restraint.
The strong combines
Moon+Venus (loving, arts-rich, wife-devoted); Moon+Mercury (sharp, high status, wife-loving); Budha+Sukkiran+Sevvāy & Budha+Sukkiran+Sani act very well; Mars+Rāhu+Guru gives high standing.
The steady middle
Budha+Candra+Sukkiran is okay; Candra+Sevvāy+Sani works to a degree; Mercury+Saturn is not bad (shrewd, work through others); the nodes with Mercury don't reduce its distinction.
The mixed / conflicted
Moon+Mars (stubborn, high desire); Moon+Jupiter (aimless); Mars+Venus (wife neglected); Mercury+Jupiter (vain-honour); all a little self-interested.
The difficult combines
Moon+Saturn & Moon+nodes (low company, crooked minds); Mars+Saturn ('the mind a battlefield'); Mars+nodes (crooked ways, quarrels, anti-government acts).
Teaching note
The crown: Budha+Candra+Sukkiran+Guru = a 'wondrous state,' and Mercury+Venus = the Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga (9th + 10th lords). Then the strong Venus/Mercury families down through the conflicted Mars and difficult Saturn/nodal combines. The Venus-and-Mercury combines dominate the good end.
Putting it together
"The makara is strong only in its own depths. Give the Capricorn native Venus's yoga and Mercury's integrity, and the deep, patient climber reaches the summit."
Capricorn in one line: Saturn's deep, patient, thrifty cardinal-earth sign of the makara — self-guarded and ambitious, strong within its own depths.
Lean on Venus (full yoga) & Mercury; remember exalted-Mars gives power, not virtue; watch the fallen Jupiter and the enemy Sun. Confirm with the whole chart.
Teaching note
Close the arc. The Capricorn lesson: a deep, thrifty, self-guarded Saturn sign whose crown is Venus (full yogakāraka) and whose integrity is Mercury (half); its great teaching paradox is exalted Mars (power, not virtue). Reiterate: single factors are indicative; confirm with strength, aspects, vargas, daśā.
Key takeaways
Magaram = cardinal, earthy, Saturn-ruled — deep, patient, thrifty, self-guarded; the 'holy sign' of uttarāyaṇa.
Mars is EXALTED here — but as bādhaka lord, that power runs to force, not virtue.
Venus (5th & 10th) is the full yogakāraka — the sign's finest planet; Mercury (9th) the half.
Jupiter is debilitated (laziness, indecision); the Sun is the lone enemy (but lengthens life).
Mercury + Venus = Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga; Budha+Candra+Sukkiran+Guru = a 'wondrous state'.
Māraka (2 & 7) and bādhaka (11) are textbook-standard here; confirm with the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap — have students say each back. The two to remember: exalted Mars = power not virtue (the chapter's paradox), and Venus the full yogakāraka + the Dharma-Karmādhipati yoga (why the deep, thrifty sign can still rise high).
