மேஷம்Mesham — Aries
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Welcome. This deck teaches the Mesham (Aries) Ascendant chapter. We move from what the sign is, to how to judge its strength, to what the classics say, then planet-by-planet and combination-by-combination. Set expectations: the author's own closing caution is that single-factor readings are ~60% reliable — we treat everything here as indicative, to be confirmed with the full chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, planetary dignities, symbol, significations, places, body & health
Judging strength
The 11 factors for the Lagna lord + the strength sources (Ṣaḍbala, Dik, Parivartana, Neechabhaṅga…)
The native's portrait
Classical views (Phaladīpikā, Jātaka Alaṅkāram) and the author's experience-based reading
Nine planets in Mesham
Sun · Moon · Mars · Mercury · Jupiter · Venus · Saturn · Rahu · Ketu — each alone in the Lagna
Conjunctions
Two- and multi-planet combinations and what they turn the native into
Synthesis
Why aspects matter and how to use these results responsibly
Teaching note
Give students the map. Six movements. Emphasize the arc: from static facts about the sign, to the dynamic skill of judging strength, to interpretation. Tell them the planet and conjunction sections are the practical payoff, but the strength method is what separates an astrologer from a lookup table.
Mesham at a glance
Symbol
ஆடு — the Ram (a quadruped). Hence 'Aries'.
Element / guṇa
Fire (agni) · Rajoguṇa — passionate, active, fierce
Modality
Chara rāśi (சர — movable) · Oja (ஓஜ — odd) · male sign
Order & body
1st sign of the zodiac · signifies the head (தலை · śiras)
Ruler
Mars (செவ்வாய் · Kuja) — also holds Aries as mūlatrikoṇa
Direction / colour
East (கிழக்கு) · Red (சிவப்பு) · gains strength at night
Teaching note
Anchor the mental image: a ram, fire, the head, the first sign. Every trait later flows from these. 'Movable + fire + male + rajoguṇa' already predicts an impulsive, forceful, leading temperament. Note it strengthens at night and its direction is East — used in praśna and muhūrta work.
Planetary dignities in Mesham
| Graha | Dignity in Mesham | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (சூரியன்) | Exaltation — உச்சம் | Deep uccha here; the classic yogakāraka signifier for Aries |
| Mars (செவ்வாய்) | Own sign + Mūlatrikoṇa | Lord of the sign; rules both the 1st and the 8th |
| Jupiter (குரு) | Friend — நட்பு | The one graha that gains friendship here; 9th & 12th lord |
| Moon · Mercury · Venus | Neutral — சமம் | Śukra, Budha, Candra are all sama in Mesham |
| Saturn (சனி) | Debilitation — நீசம் | Falls to nīca; strength and its loss are both problematic |
| Rahu & Ketu | Enmity — பகை | Both take śatru; act through the sign-lord Mars + own nature |
Teaching note
This table is the backbone of every judgment that follows. Drill it: Sun exalted, Saturn debilitated, Mars is lord and mūlatrikoṇa. Jupiter alone is friendly. Rahu/Ketu are enemies but borrow Mars's behaviour. Ask students to predict, from this alone, which single planets in the Lagna will be 'good' (Sun, Moon, Jupiter) and which 'mixed' (Saturn, Venus, nodes).
What Mesham governs (kārakatva)
Industry & fire
Machinery & factories · power-looms · furnaces & fire-kilns · smelting/metal-casting · blacksmith's forge · electricity generation · dye-houses · lime
Earth & minerals
Stone · soil · metals & ores · mineral goods · chemistry/chemicals · fuel & petroleum · red grains · herbs · dams · latex-yielding trees
Living & goods
Wool · goat-rearing · poultry · quadruped animals · sandalwood · land-related vehicles
Shadow side
Accidents · fire & cut-wounds · murders in the grip of emotion · rash, unconsidered deeds
Teaching note
Significations matter for career and event prediction. Notice the through-line: fire, metal, heat, machinery, red things. When Mesham or its lord is prominent, these domains surface as profession or as the flavour of events. The 'shadow side' — accidents, burns, impulsive violence — recurs in the health and Mars sections; flag it now.
Places ruled by Mesham
Within Bhārat
Vindhya range · Himalayan belt — Kashmir, Nepal, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Pashupatinath, Haridwar · the Deccan plateau
Around the world
France · Switzerland · Britain · Germany · Syria · Jordan · Israel · Denmark · Sweden · NW Africa · parts of South America
Teaching note
Places are used in mundane astrology and relocation questions. The author is honest that the country list is uncertain, but stands firmly behind one principle — seismic and volcanic zones are Mesham's. The Krios/Kriya note is a nice history moment: our zodiac names travelled from Greece into Sanskrit texts.
Body, character & health
Signifies (kārakatva)
Kshatriya caste · pṛṣṭhodaya (a 'hind-rising' sign) · short, stocky build
Gives (qualities)
Bravery (vīra) · boldness (dhīra) · valorous deeds · skill in sport · life among mountains · a bond with fire · rajoguṇa
Health tendencies
Headache · fever (jvara) · afflictions/growths in the brain · disorders of excess heat · baldness of the head
The head is Mesham's body-part — so its ailments cluster there: headaches, heat, the scalp.
Teaching note
Tie the head-signification to the health list — everything gathers at the head and around heat. Pṛṣṭhodaya (rises hind-part-first) affects timing/strength of results and is worth explaining: hind-rising signs are stronger by night, which matches Mesham gaining strength at night from the earlier slide.
How to judge a Lagna — the 11 factors
Before pronouncing any result, weigh the Lagna lord through eleven questions.
- 1 · Is the Lagna male/female, benefic/malefic?
- 2 · Is the Lagna lord a benefic or malefic?
- 3 · What state does the lord reach in its house?
- 4 · How does that house's lord regard the Lagna lord?
- 5 · Is the lord in kendra / trikoṇa / paṇapara / āpoklima / upacaya / dusthāna?
- 6 · Does the Lagna lord aspect the Lagna itself?
- 7 · Which planets aspect the Lagna lord — and give it strength?
- 8 · Which planets conjoin it, and with what lordships?
- 9 · Any planets in the 8th from the lord's house?
- 10 · Any planets in the 8th from the Lagna?
- 11 · Its sāra / sama / maṇḍala / paruva (avasthā) states?
Teaching note
This is the methodological heart. The lesson: a sign is not read from a table — its lord's condition decides everything. Walk a few: factor 5 (which kind of house), factor 6 (self-aspect), factor 9-10 (planets in the 8th = threats to the very life/longevity the Lagna represents). Tell students the next two slides expand the strength sources behind these questions.
Sources of strength — I
1 · Sthāna bala (positional)
Reckoned via the classical Ṣaḍbala. Judge by friendly signs, own/exalted/mūlatrikoṇa houses vs. debilitation/enemy houses.
2 · Dik bala (directional)
| Planet | Gains Dik bala in |
|---|---|
| Sun & Mars | 10th house (dasama kendra) |
| Mercury & Jupiter | 1st — the Lagna itself |
| Moon & Venus | 4th house (caturtha kendra) |
| Saturn | 7th house (saptama kendra) |
3 · Sāra bala (nakṣatra-pāda)
Strong when a friendly/own-star planet lands in a good navāṁśa; weak from enemy/nīca navāṁśa placements.
Teaching note
Introduce Ṣaḍbala as the formal six-fold strength (Sthāna, Dig, Kāla, Ceṣṭā, Naisargika, Dṛg). The author uses approximations of it. Make students memorise the Dik bala table — it's exam-standard and constantly used: angles give directional strength, but which planet in which angle differs.
Sources of strength — II
Parivartana yoga
Exchange between friendly lords — e.g. Mars in Leo (Sun's), Sun in Aries. Uccha/nīca exchanges take on those states.
Neechabhaṅga rāja yoga
Debilitation cancelled when the nīca-lord or the uccha-lord attains dignity in a kendra from the Moon — turning weakness into a rāja yoga.
Malefic in a dusthāna
A malefic Lagna-lord in 3/6/8/12 loses its harmful lordship — the loss is itself a kind of strength.
Dṛṣṭi & conjunction
Benefic aspect = dṛṣṭi bala; strength from conjunction (author's usage: 'naisargika'). Aspect often beats conjunction.
Benefics in Lagna & varga
Śubhas in the 1st; strength across ṣaḍvarga / saptavarga / daśavarga divisional charts.
Vargottama & svakṣetra
Same sign in rāśi + navāṁśa (vargottama); rulership/mūlatrikoṇa strength in the Lagna itself.
Teaching note
These are the 'yoga' layers on top of raw position. Neechabhaṅga is the star concept — a debilitated planet can become a rāja-yoga giver. Note the author's non-standard use of 'naisargika' for conjunction strength; in BPHS naisargika is inherent strength and aspect strength is dṛg bala. Flag it so students aren't confused reading other books.
Classical view · Phaladīpikā
Round eyes · weak knees/shins · fierce temper · fearful of water · a fast eater · strong desire · a wanderer · fickle-minded · a teller of untruths · a body scarred by old wounds.
Teaching note
Read this as a period portrait, not a verdict. Point out how many traits echo the sign's fire/movable nature: impulsive, restless, forceful. 'Fearful of water' is a nice detail — fire fears its opposite. Contrast is coming: the next text disagrees on several points, which teaches students that classics differ and judgment is required.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
Renders royal/state service · firm, unwavering intellect · cheerful · holds high office · wealthy · performs valorous deeds · lean-bodied · loves the dharma-śāstras · high neck · truthful · prone to anger · subdues beasts.
fire-burn
7 & 10
poison-fever
mouth & ear disease
poison
danger by water
spider-boil, fissures
Teaching note
Contrast with the previous slide: here the native is noble, truthful, firm — quite different from Phaladīpikā's fickle liar. That divergence is the teaching point the author makes explicitly: which do you accept? Answer — neither blindly; you read the actual chart. The affliction timeline is a taste of āyur-daśā style timing; treat as illustrative.
From experience · temperament
The fire temperament
Hot-tempered, rough, obstinate — yet genuinely hard-working. Courageous, but with a reckless, 'blind' courage.
Acts first, thinks later
Little forethought, no worry for consequences, scant discretion. Gets stuck in situations they can't cleverly escape.
Must be right
Insists others accept their word without question; quick to criticise; changes decisions often on a whim.
All-or-nothing bonds
Loves family but won't show it. Trusts totally or hates bitterly — and cuts people off completely.
Teaching note
This is the author's own synthesis and the most practically useful portrait. Frame it kindly for students: these are tendencies, strongest when unrefined by benefics. The 'blind courage' and 'all-or-nothing' patterns are the signature. Note he says traits shift with conjunctions/aspects — so this is the baseline the planet sections modify.
From experience · desire, conflict, health
Self-belief to excess
Bold to the point of bravado; will promise what they can't deliver. Not short on daring.
Strong desire
High passion; a hot constitution. Can be rough with partners — and Mesha-born women may share the same intensity.
Unafraid of conflict
Quarrels, disputes, coming to blows hold no fear; with hard aspects, some turn to rowdyism.
Health watch
Headaches, baldness, hair-fall, recurrent fever, spider-boils; piles, stomach & bile/liver trouble; fractures, burns, falls.
Teaching note
Handle the desire/roughness material maturely and non-judgmentally — it's the classical text's framing of a hot constitution, not a moral claim. The health card consolidates the scattered medical notes: everything centres on head, heat, blood, and injury-proneness from an active life. This closes the 'who is the native' block.
The Nine Planets
in Mesham
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Aries native
Sūrya · Candra · Kuja · Budha · Guru · Śukra · Śani · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Transition to the practical core. Remind students: 'alone in the Lagna' is the base case; real charts add aspects and conjunctions, covered next. Keep the dignities table from slide 4 in mind — it predicts most of what follows.
Sun (Sūrya)
Exalted · 5th lord · yogakāraka
- Exalted in the Lagna and a yogakāraka — gives high rise: fame, renown, influence, status, office.
- With only benefic aspect/conjunction, it lifts the native to a high place.
- Gives hot temper, but also the poise to reconcile quickly and the drive to climb.
- As 5th (putra) lord — good for progeny if Jupiter is well placed; as pitṛkāraka, support from the father.
Teaching note
Sun is the star performer here — remember it's exalted and rules the 5th trine. Teach the 'clean chart' caveat: the elevation is fullest when unafflicted. Link to the dignities slide.
Moon (Candra)
Neutral · 4th lord · dual
- Waxing (śukla) Moon is excellent — mental firmness, courage, boldness.
- As 4th lord: mother's love & support, comfortable/modern homes, gains from agricultural land; with well-placed Mars, a landlord's status.
- Waning (kṛṣṇa) Moon: only pretends courage, threatens emptily, backs down when challenged.
- Shallow knowledge worn as expertise; foodie; fickle and over-spending on women; never satisfied.
Teaching note
The waxing/waning split is the whole lesson — same placement, opposite outcomes. Always check the Moon's pakṣa (lunar phase) before judging. This is a recurring principle across all signs, not just Aries.
Mars (Kuja)
Lord + mūlatrikoṇa · 1st & 8th
- Lagna lord in the Lagna = a strong configuration; also mūlatrikoṇa lord, so it takes on the strength of life itself.
- Owns the 8th (longevity/trouble) too — but placed 6th from the 8th, its malefic force is reduced.
- Gives unmatched courage, swift action, hot temper, valour, love of sport; blunt, forceful, will use pressure.
- Risks: injuries — cuts, burns, boils, piles, fractures, falls; wants to lead and never stoops. Fearless.
Teaching note
Nuance here: Mars is both the natural lord (great) and the 8th lord (a dusthāna). The author resolves it — Lagna lord in Lagna dominates, and the 8th-lordship's harm is muted. Students should learn to weigh a planet's multiple lordships, not label it good or bad.
Mercury (Budha)
Neutral · 3rd & 6th lord
- As 3rd & 6th lord alone, it breeds blind courage and action without forethought.
- The already-quarrelsome native won't drop a fight — and drags in fights that never came; a hair-splitting sophist.
- Strong desire, mind always on women; believes one may earn by any means; unsteady, takes crooked shortcuts.
- If Mars & Lagna-benefics are weak: risk of mental disorder, epilepsy; irregular eating → ulcer, appendicitis, lungs; neglects treatment; debts.
Teaching note
Mercury rules two upachaya/dusthāna houses here (3, 6), so it leans combative and restless rather than scholarly. The health warnings depend on Mars and benefics being weak — a good example of conditional prediction.
Jupiter (Guru)
Friend · 9th & 12th lord · bhāgya
- 9th (dharma) lordship subdues its 12th-house side; becomes a benefic doing good for Mesham.
- Influence, honour, status, leadership; charity — wells, tanks, dāna, anna-dāna; sought for counsel; respected by elders.
- But the 12th (vyaya) side makes them spend heavily — even borrowing — to protect their prestige and for public service.
- Famous young; keeps discreet women-ties; manages so cleverly none can fault them; but flattery sways them.
Teaching note
Jupiter is the great benefic and 9th lord — the most auspicious single graha for Aries after the Sun. The teaching subtlety: it also rules the 12th, so generosity shades into over-spending. A planet's two houses always both speak.
Venus (Śukra)
Neutral · 2nd & 7th lord
- 2nd & 7th lord alone, with weak Mars → henpecked, yet keeps a mistress ('small house'); ties to upper-class women; sometimes several consorts.
- As kalatra house & kāraka in the Lagna, still grants conjugal comfort — but placed 12th from the 2nd, a perpetual money-pinch.
- Craves luxury; spends to be admired; no idea of restraint; loves ornaments, perfumes, vehicles; a feast even on borrowed money.
- Fire sign + water planet = uneven health, low blood-strength, illness catches easily; careless in women-matters.
Teaching note
Venus is uneasy in a fire sign and sits 12th from its own 2nd house, hence the chronic cash-flow theme. Present the relationship material as the text's frame of a strong-desire constitution. Note the elemental clash (fire sign, water planet) explaining the health note.
Saturn (Śani)
Debilitated · 10th & 11th lord
- 11th lord = a bādhaka sthāna lord, so it does create problems in the Lagna.
- Debilitated and weak — until it gets neechabhaṅga it harms little, but it makes them lazy.
- As 10th (career) lord, weakened here → no stability in profession; nothing done properly. Neither strength nor its loss is good.
- Body: nerve slackness, knee/ankle joint pain, sometimes foot pain. Better only with benefic aspect than conjunction — Saturn drags benefics down.
Teaching note
Debilitated Saturn is the mirror image of exalted Sun. The paradox the author draws — it's bad if strong and bad if weak — teaches that dignity alone doesn't settle a verdict; house-lordship and role matter. The 'puppy with a piglet' image: Saturn degrades what it joins.
கேது)
Both take enmity · no own sign
- An even worse solo placement than Rahu. Grimly determined to do a thing by any means; fears nothing — not even violence; opaque to others; drawn to mantra-tantra practices himself.
Teaching note
Key nodal principle: no own sign, so they act through the dispositor (Mars here) plus their own shadow nature. Debunk the 'Rahu rāja yoga' myth as the author does — it needs supporting kendra placements. Ketu worse than Rahu alone. This closes the single-planet section.
Conjunctions
in Mesham
Kūṭṭu graha — two and more grahas together in the Lagna
…and why the aspecting planets must never be forgotten
Teaching note
Second practical block. Combinations can override single-planet tendencies. Warn students not to memorise these as fixed verdicts — the closing slide's aspect rule reshapes them.
Sun with… (the favourable side)
Sun + Moon
Wonderful — 4th & 5th lords lift the native high; new/full-moon states; the myth 'amāvāsyā-born is a thief' is false. Ātma- + manas-kāraka = real talent; honour, office, comfort.
Sun + Mars
Not bad — builds leadership; fearless, achieves by any means; political ties; lives at the top using others; heavy involvement with women.
Sun + Mercury
Subtle, skilful mind (Budha-Āditya); 'live any way' — ignores rules; makes and beats enemies; borrows freely; self-serving, never yields.
Sun + Jupiter
Very wonderful — two trine lords; leadership thrust upon them; public-spirited, magnanimous, charitable; posts like trustee, maṭhādhipati, magistrate; discreet in women-matters.
Teaching note
Group the Sun conjunctions since Sun is exalted and pivotal. Sun+Moon and Sun+Jupiter are the standouts (trine lords, luminaries). Sun+Mercury = Budha-Āditya, sharp intellect. Debunk the amāvāsyā superstition explicitly — good myth-busting moment.
Sun with… (the difficult side)
Sun + Venus
Two born enemies — family friction: an unhappy or quarrelsome wife pushes them to other women, a lasting mistress, a second marriage; lavish, live-for-today spending.
Sun + Saturn
Father & son, yet enemies — exalted Sun gives Saturn neechabhaṅga, good for career/earning; but indecisive, delays, trouble from staff, partners, spouse, low associations.
Sun + Rahu
Unsatisfying — enemies; Rahu disrupts, drives covert acts; a hidden stain behind a showy mask; not trustworthy yet convincing; earns by any means, spends blindly.
Sun + Ketu
Not good — cunning schemers, every crooked path; quick and secretive. With Mars added: political ties + double-dealing 'underground' types; even mantra-tantra links.
Teaching note
The harder Sun pairings. Sun+Saturn is instructive: exalted Sun rescues debilitated Saturn (neechabhaṅga), good for work even while character stays conflicted — outcome and temperament can diverge. Keep the tone descriptive, not moralising.
The powerful combines
Sun + Moon + Mars (+ Jupiter) — the four-planet combine
Elevation with authority. With Jupiter, the effects of Gaja-Kesari, Guru-Maṅgala & Candra-Maṅgala yogas together. Unshakeable — even Saturn exalted in the 7th aspecting cannot break it. Saturn there may vex via the spouse, but the rise is assured.
Moon + Mars + Venus (+ Mercury / Saturn / Jupiter)
Income through wife/women; virility that draws them. + Mercury better still. + Saturn → work that uses women (mixed good & bad). Mars+Saturn alone lifts the career line; with Moon or in kendras → big business magnates; Jupiter's touch adds politics & office.
Teaching note
The four-planet combine is the deck's peak yoga — name-drop Gaja-Kesari etc. and stress its resilience to malefics. The Moon-Mars-Venus family shows how added planets steer the same core toward business or toward exploitation. Great place to ask students to reason about additions themselves.
Spiritual & difficult combines
Moon + Mars + Rahu/Ketu
Low-grade deeds for comfort; but the nodal touch can turn to spirituality. Sun-Mars-Jupiter-Rahu-Ketu may even make a siddha, mahān or swāmiyār — without Mars, a doer of good; with Rahu/Ketu, self-serving, even a false swāmiyār.
Saturn + Moon (and kin)
Not good; with Rahu/Ketu/Mercury, outright cheats. Mercury-Saturn-Venus is thoroughly bad. Only Venus+Jupiter present → tolerable, life well-set — yet a double life; called 'Āṣāḍha-bhūtis' (hypocrites).
Mercury + Venus
Unsatisfying — women forever on the mind, even when married; with waning Moon, disastrous; debt and disease for women's sake; Saturn added → runs a brothel or lodge.
Teaching note
Notice the fork: the same nodal contacts can produce a genuine renunciate or a fraud — Jupiter/Mars presence tilts it. The 'Āṣāḍha-bhūti' (hypocrite) archetype is worth explaining. End the combos section by reminding them these are the placed planets only — aspects come next.
Never forget the aspects
"Many astrologers judge only by where planets sit, and never count the aspecting planets — yet aspects can greatly change the outcome."
Even a bad combine (Saturn-Rahu-Ketu-Mercury) is softened by Jupiter's 5th aspect, and controlled more by its 9th aspect.
Author's honesty: these Lagna-only results hold to about 60%. Full judgment needs bhāva strength, aspects, vargas and daśā.
Teaching note
This is the single most important teaching slide. The book deliberately covers only planets IN the Lagna; aspects onto the Lagna would double the material. Drive home the ~60% figure as intellectual humility — a model for how students should speak to clients. Confirm every indication against the whole chart.
Key takeaways
Mesham = fire, movable, male, the head — impulsive, brave, leading.
Dignities first: Sun exalted, Saturn debilitated, Mars lord, Jupiter friend.
Read the lord's strength (11 factors, Ṣaḍbala) before any verdict.
Sun, Moon (waxing), Jupiter shine alone; Saturn, Venus, nodes are mixed.
Conjunctions can override single-planet tendencies — check the whole group.
Aspects reshape everything; single-factor readings are ~60% — confirm with the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap slide — have students say each back. If they leave with anything, it's: dignities → lord's strength → planets → conjunctions → aspects, and the humility of the 60% rule.
