ரிஷபம்Rishabam — Taurus
Results of the Ascendant (Lakkinabāva Palan) — a teaching walk-through for students
Synthesized from 12 Lakkinabāva Palangaḷ by M. Madheswaran (Vijaya Pathippagam, Coimbatore, 2011) · with classical Jyotiṣa references
Teaching note
Welcome back to the series. Chapter 2 is the Rishabam (Taurus) Ascendant. Set the frame: where Mesham was fire (Sun exalted, Mars ruler), Rishabam is its water counterpart — Moon exalted, Venus ruler. Same study method as last week; a calmer, earthier temperament. As always, single-factor readings are indicative, confirmed against the full chart.
What we will cover
Foundations
Nature, ruler, dignities, the unique dharma-karma lord, significations, places
House map & doṣas
Lordships for a Taurus chart, plus the māraka and bādhaka picture
The native's portrait
Three classical texts (Phaladīpikā, Jātaka Alaṅkāram, Satyāchārya) + experience
Nine planets
Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — each alone in the Lagna
Conjunctions
Venus with each graha, and the multi-planet combines
Synthesis
Graha-yuddha, aspects, and how to use these results
Teaching note
Same six-movement arc as the Mesham deck, so students feel the rhythm of the series. Flag that this chapter has three classical portraits (not two) and, unlike Mesham, no separate 'strength method' section — that general method was taught last week and still applies.
Rishabam at a glance
Symbol
எருது — the Bull / Ox (a quadruped). Hence 'Taurus'.
Element / class
Earth-natured, water-ruled · saumya (benign) sign
Modality
Sthira (ஸ்திர · fixed) · Yugma (யுக்ம · even) · female sign
Order & body
2nd sign of the zodiac · signifies the face (முகம் · mukha)
Ruler / exaltation
Venus (சுக்கிரன்) rules · Moon (சந்திரன்) is exalted here
Direction / colour
South (தென்) · White (வெண்மை) · strong at night · pṛṣṭhodaya
Teaching note
Anchor the image: a bull, farmland, the face, the second sign — patient, sensual, steady. Draw the elegant parallel the author loves: Mesham = fire pair (Sun uccha, Mars lord); Rishabam = water pair (Moon uccha, Venus lord). Fixed + earth + Venus already predicts stability, comfort-seeking, and love of beauty.
Planetary dignities in Rishabam
| Graha | Dignity / role | Teaching note |
|---|---|---|
| Venus (சுக்கிரன்) | Own sign — ஆட்சி | Lord of the Lagna and of worldly pleasures |
| Moon (சந்திரன்) | Exaltation — உச்சம் | Exalted here; 3rd lord (courage, enterprise) |
| Mercury · Saturn | Friends — நட்பு | Both become śubha AND yogakāraka for Taurus |
| Saturn (சனி) | Dharma-karma lord | Owns the 9th & 10th — a distinction unique to Taurus |
| Sun · Jupiter | Enmity — பகை | Both are enemies of this Ascendant |
| Rahu & Ketu | Debilitation — நீசம் | Both fall to nīca; act via the sign-lord Venus |
Teaching note
The backbone table. Star fact: Saturn rules BOTH the 9th (dharma) and 10th (karma) — the classic Taurus yogakāraka, and the only sign where one planet owns both trines-of-action. Mercury and Saturn are the friends/yogakārakas; Sun and Jupiter are enemies here; the nodes debilitate. Predict from this which single planets shine (Venus, Moon-waxing, Mercury, Saturn).
The Taurus house map & its doṣas
| House | Rāśi | Lord |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Taurus | Venus |
| 2 | Gemini | Mercury |
| 3 | Cancer | Moon |
| 4 | Leo | Sun |
| 5 | Virgo | Mercury |
| 6 | Libra | Venus |
| 7 | Scorpio | Mars |
| 8 | Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| 9 | Capricorn | Saturn |
| 10 | Aquarius | Saturn |
| 11 | Pisces | Jupiter |
| 12 | Aries | Mars |
Yogakāraka
Saturn (9th+10th) is the great yogakāraka; Mercury (2nd+5th) is a benefic yogakāraka too.
Bādhaka — 9th
Fixed signs take the 9th as bādhaka; Saturn is bādhakādhipati, but as a yogakāraka the doṣa is much reduced.
Māraka — author's note
The author names the 3rd & 8th (Moon, Jupiter) as māraka here. Standard texts use the 2nd & 7th (Mercury, Mars) — teach both.
Teaching note
Have students internalise the lordships — every later judgment uses them. Two teaching points: (1) Saturn as sole 9+10 lord is why Taurus is considered fortunate for career-with-dharma. (2) Be honest that the author's māraka assignment (3 & 8) departs from the textbook 2 & 7 — a good moment on how traditions vary. Bādhaka = 9th is correct for a fixed sign.
What Rishabam governs (kārakatva)
Land & dairy
Cattle & quadrupeds · crop-fields · wet paddy · milk, curd, ghee, butter · white wheat · field-beans
Beauty & goods
Luxury & ornaments · textiles · ready-made & fancy goods · groceries · household goods · jewellery-making
Arts & trade
Songs, poems, dance, music, acting, cinema · hotels · vegetable & fruit trade · passenger transport
Body & health
The face · semen/reproductive fluid · union with women · facial scars · kapha & respiratory disease (asthma, bronchitis, sinus)
Teaching note
The through-line is Venus + earth: land, dairy, beauty, the arts, and the pleasures of the senses — very different from Mesham's fire and metal. Note the strong 'women / textiles / arts / hotels' cluster for career reading, and the kapha/respiratory signature for health, both of which recur in the planet sections.
Places ruled by Rishabam
Within Bhārat
Bengal · eastern Orissa · eastern & SE Andhra · the Kaveri delta · eastern Uttar Pradesh · NE Bihar · the banks of the Narmada
Around the world
Siberia (Russia) · Holland · central America · Ireland · regions rich in crop-fields
Teaching note
Used in mundane and relocation work. The common thread is fertile agricultural land — fitting for the sign of the bull and the fields. The Tāvuri/Taurus note pairs with last week's Krios/Kriya: our zodiac names travelled from Greece into Sanskrit.
Classical view · two authorities
Phaladīpikā (Mantreśvara)
Broad thighs & face; inclined to farming; comfortable from mid-life on; fond of women; charitable; patient; fond of tending cattle; a mole on the seat (pṛṣṭhodaya).
Satyāchārya
Thick lips, wide forehead; kapha-vāta body; a giver; big spender; few sons, more daughters; ever eager at work; wealthy; devoted to the wife; hates weapons; gives to relatives.
Teaching note
Read these as period portraits. Both agree on the earthy, comfort-loving, generous, family-devoted core — very Venusian/Taurine. Point out the recurring 'farming, cattle, patience, wealth, devotion to wife' motifs; contrast with Mesham's fiery restlessness.
Classical view · Jātaka Alaṅkāram
Worships ascetics; guards truth; eats sparingly; loves sour taste; stout build; does allotted work; keen on jyotiṣa; collects ornaments; small ears; subtle intellect; a cough ailment; many children.
fire
neck disease
20 & 27
fever
Teaching note
Note the 'keen on jyotiṣa, subtle intellect, guards truth' additions — a more scholarly shading. The three texts agree and differ, which is exactly why the author then gives his experience-based reading. Treat the timeline as illustrative of āyur-style timing, not a verdict.
From experience · temperament
Earth-like patience
Deliberate and unhurried; think before acting; never hasty. Even resentment stays hidden.
Family at the centre
Deep attachment to family; charitable to dāna, dharma and temple works; the wife's hand somewhat rules the home.
Discreet desire
Strong desire and fondness for women — but any outside connection is cleverly, secretly concealed from the wife.
Comfort & beauty
Not miserly; good spenders, especially on women, clothes, ornaments, perfumes; always neat and stylish.
Teaching note
The author's own synthesis — the most useful portrait. The Taurus signature: patient, steady, home-and-comfort-centred, aesthetically refined, privately sensual. Frame kindly as tendencies modified by conjunction/aspect. Contrast sharply with Mesham's impulsive fire.
From experience · life, pleasures, health
Peace-loving
Emotionally tender; dislike quarrels and litigation; get along with neighbours; will pay to end trouble quickly.
'My own work'
Keep out of others' affairs; low taste for public service — but wholehearted in divine matters; finish any duty well.
Sensual & steady
Cool constitution — can sustain long in union; women are drawn to them; fond of pets, cool foods, sour tastes; dislike travel.
Health watch
Facial pimples, scars, blemishes; kapha & respiratory disease — cough, sinus, pneumonia; ~75% risk of women-related illness.
Teaching note
Handle the sensual material maturely — it's the text's framing of a cool, enduring constitution, not a moral claim. The health card gathers the kapha/respiratory signature and the facial theme (Taurus = the face). Note the homebody streak: achieve through others, from one place.
The Nine Planets
in Rishabam
Each graha alone in the Lagna — what it makes of the Taurus native
Śukra · Sūrya · Candra · Kuja · Budha · Guru · Śani · Rāhu · Ketu
Teaching note
Into the practical core. Remind students: Venus (the lord), Mercury and Saturn are the friends/yogakārakas; keep the dignities table in view. Note Rishabam gives good results to several placements that trouble other signs — even Saturn.
Venus (Śukra)
The lord at home — pleasure, and a debt-catch.
- Lord of pleasures in its own sign: an unquenchable drive to taste every worldly comfort; always well-dressed, attractive, perfumed.
- Deep attachment, especially to daughters and women; a comfortable life is assured; prefers to act through others.
- But also 6th lord (enemies, debt, disease) — some ailment always present; kapha, cough, lung trouble; covert enemies (overcome).
- Luxury-love → big spender who borrows freely; wife dominates the home (Venus = Lagna lord + spouse-kāraka). In a female chart, she rules the husband.
Teaching note
Venus is the whole personality of this sign — pleasure, beauty, relationship. The teaching nuance: it also rules the 6th, so debt and minor chronic illness shadow the comfort. The spouse-dominance theme recurs whenever Venus or the 7th is involved.
Sun (Sūrya)
An enemy — yet good here.
- As 4th lord it is an enemy of the Lagna, but a malefic may sit in a kendra.
- Clever reasoning: Rishabam is the 10th from the Sun's own 4th (Leo) — the very house where the Sun gets Dik bala — so it fully delivers its 4th-house good.
- Power to earn fast; comfortable, modern, luxurious homes; responsible posts with political/government connection, even unsought.
- Acts well without chasing profit; spends on good deeds and charity; self-motivated. Sun alone here gives only good results.
Teaching note
Great worked example of positional reasoning: an 'enemy' planet turns beneficial because of where it sits (10th from its own house = Dik bala). Teach students to trace these relationships rather than label a planet good/bad.
Moon (Candra)
Exalted · 3rd lord
- Exalted 3rd lord (courage, enterprise, victory) — with a waxing Moon, works turn out well; they act with courage and succeed.
- Always neat and disciplined; discharge duty precisely; get things done cleverly through others, especially women.
- Reconcile with a smile, never harsh; skilled at winning women over; savour worldly pleasures and women.
- With the exalted 3rd-lord in the Lagna, remarkable skill in union — unforgettable to partners; 'but they leap from flower to flower.'
Teaching note
Moon is exalted here, so this is a strong, attractive placement — but check the pakṣa (waxing vs waning) first, always. The 'flower to flower' line captures the sensual-but-restless-in-love shadow. This mirrors the waxing/waning lesson from Mesham.
Mars (Kuja)
Neutral · 7th & 12th
- Lord of the 7th (spouse) and 12th (expenditure); as 12th-lord in the Lagna it dominates the Lagna-lord.
- The wife's rule prevails at home — a hot-tempered, big-spending wife who can push the native into debt.
- Restless desire, never fully satisfied; other-women connections the wife may discover — for he cannot hide, and sudden anger exposes him.
- As lord of the reproductive-house in the Lagna: women-related diseases likelier; headache, facial cuts, burns, heat-disorders.
Teaching note
Mars is neutral to Taurus but rules the 7th and 12th, so it lands squarely on marriage and spending. The inability to conceal (sudden anger) is why the native ends up subdued at home — a nice character-mechanics point.
Mercury (Budha)
Friend · 2nd & 5th · yogakāraka
- Dhana (2nd) & pañcama (5th) lord in the Lagna: immense sharpness of intellect and cleverness; thinks things through, revises wrong decisions.
- Somewhat thrifty — liberal only on necessary expense; careful about savings; mindful of honour, so acts cautiously.
- Inclination to public service & divine matters; important responsibility comes and is discharged well, so fame follows.
- Reluctant to borrow, yet money still comes; charitable after judging worthiness. Gets Dik bala in the Lagna as a śubha yogakāraka — special results.
Teaching note
Mercury is a benefic yogakāraka here (owns the 5th trine) and gets Dik bala in the 1st — a genuinely strong, dignified placement, quite unlike Mercury-in-Mesham. Emphasise the thrift + honour + savings profile.
Jupiter (Guru)
Enemy · 8th & 11th
- 8th & 11th lord; gets Dik bala in the Lagna → good longevity strength, but makes them very lazy.
- Skilled at getting work done through others while doing nothing; a proper Āṣāḍha-bhūti (hypocrite) — noble in public, different in private; double-faced.
- Stingy 'lords' who profit from others' spending and labour, gaining fame and influence; gossip & lawsuits come, but they manage — even become village headman.
- 8th & 11th are livelihood houses, so money flows freely; some become fake swāmis; very bad but covert with women.
Teaching note
Jupiter is an ENEMY for Taurus (rules 8 & 11) — the opposite of its role in Mesham. Hence the unflattering 'hypocrite / stingy lord / fake swāmi' portrait. Good lesson that the same benefic planet plays very differently by sign-lordship.
Saturn (Śani)
Yogakāraka · 9th & 10th
- Dharmakarmādhipati (9th + 10th) — a benefic yogakāraka; the finest of yogas, unique to Taurus as one planet.
- Abundant guidance and support from the father; deep respect and affection toward him; love of divine works and pilgrimages.
- God-belief, modesty, quiet charity — yet fame seeks them; many reach high professional standing and become big industry magnates.
- The dread of Saturn does NOT apply here: even 7½-Saturn, aṣṭama & ardhāṣṭama Saturn do no harm in the Lagna; women-ties kept hidden; nerve/knee vāta possible.
Teaching note
The headline placement of the chapter. Saturn — usually feared — is the great yogakāraka for Taurus, so even its dreaded transits are benign here. This is why Taurus natives with strong Saturn rise in career with a dharmic reputation. Contrast with debilitated Saturn in Mesham.
Rahu (Rāhu)
Debilitated — and satisfying.
- Nīca in Rishabam, and a friend of Saturn whose sign this is — so its workings are satisfying.
- Covert and hard to read; reveal nothing; even their occupation is hard to discover; earn well, spend well, love luxury.
- Help others only after sizing them up; cut off those they dislike; not easily deceived; escape any tangle cleverly.
- Hide their god-belief; drawn to fierce-deity worship, mantra & tantra; connections with low-class women; may profit through widows' ties.
Teaching note
Nodal debilitation is tradition-dependent (some schools exalt Rahu in Taurus) — flag that. In the author's system, debilitated-but-Saturn-friendly Rahu behaves usefully here: shrewd, self-protective, materially successful, with an occult undercurrent.
Ketu (Ketu)
Subtle knowledge — and an occult edge.
- Immense subtle knowledge (sūkṣma-jñāna); grasp anything at once; handle any problem skilfully, so others seek their help.
- A riddle — hard to tell good from bad; but if trusted, they surely do good. Do not make an enemy of them — they can destroy enemies by any means.
- Know fierce-deity worship, mantra, tantra — others are awed or deceived; money must come, but once it comes they won't spend freely.
- Very bad with women (charm them to their will); can pose as fake swāmis; rich in philosophy, vedānta, logic; their mood can turn without warning.
Teaching note
Ketu here is the sharp, esoteric, hard-to-read type. Balance the warning with the upside: subtle intellect, problem-solving, genuine help when trusted. Note the recurring occult (mantra-tantra) motif across both nodes for Taurus.
Conjunctions
in Rishabam
Kūṭṭu graha — Venus joined with each planet, and the multi-planet combines
…and why too many planets in one house is itself a problem (graha-yuddha)
Teaching note
Because Venus is the lord, the author frames the combinations as 'Venus with X'. Warn first about the Sun's nearness to Venus — combustion/retrogression changes the reading, covered on the next slide.
Venus + Sun (and the combustion caution)
First, a caution: the Sun orbits close to Venus, so in Rishabam it often falls into retrogression, combustion (astamana), or retro-combustion. Combust → Venus dims and the Sun acts; retrograde → strength rises; retro-combust → "a cat on the fence," unable to decide.
Venus + Sun
Born enemies → mixed good & bad. Water meets fire, so the body stays uneven; unsatisfying union may bring other-women ties and delayed marriage, with frequent friction with the wife. Earning-minded yet big-spending; political & public-service leanings; wants to be foremost. Not lazy, but frequent heat-disorders, kapha diseases, indigestion, ulcer, appendicitis.
Teaching note
Teach the combustion/retrograde caution as a general Venus-Sun principle, not just for Taurus. Then the Venus+Sun reading: fire-water clash → bodily unevenness and marriage friction, but public ambition. This is why the Sun near Venus always needs care.
Venus + Moon — the two faces
+ Waxing Moon — special
Two water planets, one ruling, one exalted. In a female chart, a rāja-kumārī yoga. Attractive appearance draws women; great pleasure and income through them; strong bonds with mother, sister, daughters; high status, luxury homes, vehicles, servants, jewellery; firm mind achieves anything.
+ Waning Moon — reversed
Unsteady, fickle mind; things left half-done; bad with women. Spends lavishly (even on debt) to win praise; lazy, careless about earning; squanders ancestral property; invites needless trouble; some ailment recurs, with no care for treatment.
Teaching note
The clearest waxing/waning contrast in the chapter, and with two water planets (one exalted) the waxing case is outstanding — even a rāja-kumārī yoga for women. Always check the Moon's phase first. Mirrors the Moon lesson from both chapters.
Venus + Mars · Venus + Mercury
Venus + Mars
Knotty: Mars in the Lagna creates family strife — a dominance-struggle, constant quarrels, a big-spending wife driving them to other women (some keep a mistress). Very bad with women; take pleasure even with the worst partner and fall ill. In a female chart, well-hidden affairs. Creates uterine (women) and reproductive/base diseases (men); rough, hasty handling.
Venus + Mercury
Excellent! Influence, eloquence, fame, status, honour, comfort; fine artistic taste; an attractive face that draws women; enjoy pleasures; work with care in public & divine matters and earn fame; good earners free with charity; ancestral property; fond of luxury, art, ornaments; a life without lack and a helpful nature.
Teaching note
A clean contrast: Mars (7th/12th lord) drags Venus into marital strife and health trouble; Mercury (friend/yogakāraka) lifts Venus into art, fame and prosperity. Reinforces that the co-tenant's lordship decides the flavour.
Venus + Jupiter · Venus + Saturn
Venus + Jupiter
Strange: the 8th-lord Jupiter loses its enmity/harm; getting Dik bala and sitting 3rd from the 11th, it takes on the 11th-house benefit and raises the native to a respected, advice-giving position — getting work done on others' money. Yet a proper Āṣāḍha-bhūti: a double life, hidden fickleness with women; a life without lack.
Venus + Saturn
Excellent: the dharma-karma lord with its friend Venus — high professional distinction and many businesses, achieved from one place. A little lazy but works hard when needed; escapes entanglements; amiable with staff; public & divine involvement; quiet charity, pilgrimages. Fickle with women (others seem sweeter than the wife) but calm and unbothered; nerve slackness likely.
Teaching note
Venus+Saturn is a standout (two friends, one the great yogakāraka) — career-and-dharma strength. Venus+Jupiter is subtler: the enemy Jupiter is defanged and even helpful, but the double-life shadow remains. Great illustration of house-position rescuing an enemy planet.
Venus + Rahu · Venus + Ketu
Venus + Rahu
Not very special: they know a great deal and can't be deceived; money by any means, mostly crooked; even charity expects a return; very miserly — think ten times over expenses; no regard for justice or honesty; get women's company free while posing as generous 'lords of charity'. Keep away.
Venus + Ketu
Many times worse: skilled swindlers, pure self-servers; know every bad path and escape cleverly; covert anti-government deeds; mantra-tantra used for self and to harm; some are fake swāmis calling themselves mahān/siddha/yogi. Very bad with women — enslave them by mantra-craft. Be very cautious.
Teaching note
The difficult nodal conjunctions — materially shrewd but ethically hollow, with a false-guru shadow (Ketu worse). Present descriptively. These are the cautionary end of the Venus-conjunction spectrum, opposite the Venus+Mercury/Saturn brilliance.
The multi-planet combines
The bright combines
Venus + Sun + waxing Moon (add Mercury → very high). Add Saturn to those four → a big-business tycoon (rare). Venus + Saturn + Mercury is a 'boon-state' for Taurus. Venus+Mercury+Jupiter, Venus+Moon+Mercury/Jupiter — good with a waxing Moon.
The difficult combines
Venus + Sun, and Sun+Mars+Venus+Rahu/Ketu — sure trouble. Venus+Jupiter+Rahu/Ketu → a covert-wealth 'crooked-path' yoga. Venus+Sun/Mars+Saturn → wife-problems & honour-loss via other women. Venus+Mars+Mercury spoils character.
Teaching note
Summarise the author's combine guidance. Headline: Venus+Saturn+Mercury is the boon-state for Taurus; a waxing Moon rescues many groupings. Introduce graha-yuddha (planetary war) as the reason 'more planets' isn't 'more good'. This sets up the synthesis slide.
Putting it together
"The conjunction of the other planets must be observed precisely — and the single-planet placements kept in mind — before deciding."
Taurus in one line: patient, sensual, Venus-ruled earth — steadied by a uniquely placed Saturn (9+10) and an exalted Moon.
As with every sign, weigh strength, aspects, vargas and daśā — the Lagna-only reading is the start, not the verdict.
Teaching note
Close the analytic arc. Echo last week's discipline: single-factor readings are indicative; confirm with the whole chart. Reiterate the two structural gifts of Taurus — Saturn as sole dharma-karma lord, and the exalted Moon.
Key takeaways
Rishabam = fixed, earthy, Venus-ruled — patient, sensual, comfort-loving.
Moon is exalted; Venus rules; Mercury & Saturn are the friends/yogakārakas.
Saturn (9th+10th) is the great yogakāraka — unique to Taurus; even its dread transits are mild here.
Venus, waxing Moon, Mercury, Saturn shine; Sun & Jupiter are enemies; nodes debilitate.
The Moon's phase and the co-tenant's lordship decide a placement's flavour.
Too many planets = graha-yuddha; aspects reshape all — confirm with the full chart.
Teaching note
Recap — have students say each back. The one thing to remember: Saturn is Taurus's best friend (dharma-karma lord), and the Moon's phase plus the co-tenant's lordship govern the readings.
End of Chapter 2
Rishabam · Taurus
Next in the series: Mithunam (Gemini) — dual sign, ruler Mercury, the chest & shoulders.

Teaching note
Close warmly and preview Mithunam to keep the weekly series flowing. Remind students the study method is the same for every sign: foundations, house map, portrait, planets, conjunctions, synthesis.
